A short list of words and phrases that come to mind when describing Dad:

Veteran, Air Force Pilot, respected, loved, college professor, investor, believer, disciplined, frugal, honor, dry sense of humor, camping & canoeing, 'the wink'; and devoted husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend

Mother summed it up in a recent conversation: "I was proud of him." "I loved him very much."

My last conversation with dad, less than 48 hours before he passed:

It was my 'Goodbye' meeting with Dad. He was dying, but in typical dad fashion, he wanted to make sure everything was in place. I reminded him that, thanks to all of his efforts, Mother was taken care of. I told him that he was loved and respected. He could be at peace. I thanked him again for his military service. We continued talking.

At the end of our talk, I asked him if I could say a prayer for him. He said Ok. After praying about a number of things, at the end of the prayer I asked God to open my dad's heart to receiving Him as his Savior. Afterwards, dad told me, "I pray sometimes." I then asked him directly, "Do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?" He said "I do." I asked him a second time; and again, his response was "I do."
I will forever remember his last two meaningful words spoken to me..."I do."

Praise the Lord!



Bob...I know it's Bobbie......but in all those years Gene and I never  called
you anything but Bob.....I guess that's the way it will always be.  It was 
wonderful to have the Dayberry family just down the street for all those
years.  We were sad to see you move to town but understood  why.
Good friends are a lifelong item....no matter how near or far they are.
With Gene gone for 4 years now,the memories are just mine....but
the memories are there of  all the good times together.  Thanks for 
them.

Helen & Family,
Sorry to hear about Bobbie. He was my buddy and friend for life. Our lives were determined by how we grew up together-grade school, high school, football, college, and cross-country together. I wish we could have had more visits over the years. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, caring person and I was proud to have known him. I sincerely regret not having closer contact with him & his family-My wife of 66 years loved him too!

Also: We have so many wonderful memories of the good times we shared over the years with your parents and all the laughs and silly things we did together.    It was a great regret to us that because of your father’s ill health they were unable to visit us in England.     We always phoned each other on a fairly regular basis and we always ended up laughing.     Your mother was like a sister to me we just seemed to gel together and your father said we seemed to think alike.   I have one very vivid memory which always makes me laugh.    We were on holiday with your parents in Uray  (I may have spelled that wrongly),     The four of us decided to go to breakfast at the place we had had dinner the night before.     We left the hotel and headed off on foot, your mother and I together and your father and Michael behind.    Off we headed your mother and I talking, as usual, and after a while I realised that we had been walking some time.     We turned round and your father and Michael were leaning against the wall of the restaurant shaking their heads and laughing.    Your mother and I had walked right past it we were so busy talking.    Your father and Michael never let us forget that.



Dear Dayberry family:
Thank you so much for sending the Memorial Service program for Bobbie. I was sad to hear of his passing. I knew Helen when we were youngsters in the Salinas Valley and then we were roommates at Sacramento State College in Sacramento. That is, until she met Bobbie at a dance at Mather AFB. It seemed to be love at first sight for both of them and I was Helen's maid of honor when they married. As a couple, they were very good friends to my son when he was a cadet at the AF Academy. They opened their home to our daughter and son in law when our son graduated. Mark, our son, always enjoyed swapping stories with Bobbie about the AF.
One thing that still makes me smile. Helen and I both took a home-ec class at Sac State. The teacher was asked by someone at Mather to let her students know that they were welcome to come to the officer's club to a dance one weekend. Helen and I and several others went. The AF sent one of their little buses to pick us up at the college and we felt kind of silly driving to our "group blind date" in the bus. Most of us felt like scooting down in our seats so as not to be seen. Oh, that was another time and place to be sure.
When you see Helen tell her I remember her fondly and wish her well.

Christmastime was always a ritual for us, when Bobbie, Helen, Julian and Betty took a trip to the tree cutting place in Woodland Park. We tramped through the snow looking for the perfect tree to cut, and afterwards we had a picnic. That was so much fun. Also the annual Christmas Party at the Dewey's where all the neighbors got together. Wonderful memories.

Helen and Bob have been our wonderful friends for 56 years. We have shared many holidays with them in both Monument and Vail which have been full of laughter. We have admired Bob with how he has handled his illness and the devotion of two very happily married people who have been dear to us.

Dear Helen, Scott, Crag and Brett, 
     My thoughts are with all of you , always, but especially today, as you celebrate Bob’s life. 
     Helen, it is hard to believe that sixty- four -plus years of friendship have passed so quickly.  The memories come flooding in, and for some reason, at this moment I am picturing the four of us: Bob, Helen, Van and Peg, in the back yard at your home in High Wycombe, watching Scott and Craig on their swings. Scott and Craig are swinging. Scott’s legs are swung out to the sides as the swing passes the low point, as his legs are now too long for the short swing. Craig is easily swinging back and forth, and both are smiling, as we four are. Soon, Van and I will return to linda and Susan in Arkansas, having enjoyed one of very many interludes of time with our best friends ever. 

Although I cannot be with you, you are often in my thoughts, as you always have been, and will be.  Susan joins me in sending our love and sympathy to each of you. Thanks for all the memories.  Peg
