Charles “Rick” Souza, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 26th after an extensive illness. Born on June 29, 1946, to Mary and Charles Souza Sr. in Oakland, California, Rick's life was marked by a spirit of service, adventure, and unwavering faith.
Rick’s journey began in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he graduated from East High School and attended the University of Wyoming. There, he met the love of his life, Carolyn DeGabain, whom he married on May 13, 1967, in Cheyenne. A significant turning point came when he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War, participating in the historic 1968 Tet Offensive. His military career led him to various assignments in Massachusetts, Japan, Germany, Virginia, and Colorado, where he raised his family and earned a bachelor’s degree in Governmental Policy from Upper Iowa University.
Rick's love of country allowed him to serve the nation honorably for 20 years, culminating in the rank of First Sergeant. His passion for all things military inspired both of his sons and a grandson to follow in his footsteps: Andy served proudly in the United States Air Force and United States Space Force, retiring as a Colonel; Tim served in the United States Army, retiring as a Major; and his grandson Zane is currently serving in the United States Air Force as a security forces Airman.
After retiring from the Army, Rick dedicated his life to helping others. He worked as a social worker for Silver Key senior services in Colorado Springs and earned a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. Subsequently, he became a psychotherapist at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and served as the director of mental health, touching countless lives with his compassionate care and expertise.
Rick's passion for history and service extended beyond his professional life. He served as a docent at the National Museum of World War II Aviation, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors. He was an avid collector of historic firearms and a dedicated reenactor, immersing himself in the past. Rick's love for learning led him to explore historical sites around the world and indulge in his favorite hobbies: reading, model building, model trains, music, traveling, spending time in the mountains, and watching B-rated horror movies with his best friend, his pug dog, Gizmo.
With a sharp wit and a contagious laugh, Rick brought joy to those around him. He was a devoted follower of the Lord, serving as an elder at Village Seven Presbyterian Church and teaching numerous Sunday school classes. His faith inspired him to travel to India twice on missionary trips, sharing the love of Christ with others.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Crystal (Kurt Jennings); his sons, Andy (Davonne) and Tim (Cassie); his granddaughters, Amber, Brittany, and Emma; his grandsons, Zach and Zane; and his great-granddaughter, Scarlett. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rick was an extraordinary father figure who was always there to lend a helping hand. He was known for his unwavering support and his ability to “Poppy” anything, no matter how challenging the task.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, let us celebrate his life and the enduring impact he made on the world.
