Chew “Gene” Min Louie, 89 years old, was born in the province of Guangdong in southern China on September 6, 1935. He immigrated to the United States at the young age of 11 years old in 1946.
Gene attended high school locally at Colorado Springs High School (now Palmer High School) before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1957. He was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California. After having proudly served in the Marine Corps for over three years, Gene was honorably discharged in 1960. He was always extremely proud to be a Marine and to have served his country well. Gene always talked about his military service with great fondness.
After his service in the Marines, he married his wife, Lay Ngor Lau, on June 1, 1961 in Hong Kong. Gene was a devoted husband to Lay, and a loving father to his three children.
Gene, along with his father and two brothers operated the Grand Cafe, the first Chinese restaurant in Colorado Springs. The family welcomed their loyal customers with great food all these years from its opening in 1929 until they closed in 1998.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lay Ngor Louie; his three children, Rick (Reg) Louie, Tina (Robert) Gonzales, Chuck (Angela) Louie; and his four grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily, Sarah, and Michael.
Gene loved to fly fish and could always be found on his days off along the Arkansas River fishing at one of his many favorite fishing holes. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboy fan and enjoyed taking care of his yard and garden during the summer months. He passed away peacefully on June 18 when he was doing what he loved, taking diligent care of his yard and garden.
