Don was born on October 9, 1958, in San Luis Obispo, California, to a military family. He spent much of his childhood in Nebraska, but it was in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he built his life, found his home, and met the love of his life, DeAnna. They were married on June 24, 1989, at the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, and shared many years of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
Don proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years, working in military police before cross-training into cybersecurity. After retiring from the military, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, graduating summa cum laude, and continued his work in cybersecurity, carrying his strong work ethic and dedication into civilian life.
He was a devoted husband, father, and “Bampa.” He is survived by his beloved wife, DeAnna Wonders; his children, Dan Wonders (wife Staci), Samantha Wonders, and Ryann Wonders; and his four cherished grandchildren, Asher Leatherman, Hazel Leatherman, Danny Wonders, and Owen Wonders, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his mother, Joan Wonders; his siblings, Daniel Wonders, Kylee Wonders, Jen Wonders, and Vicki Nelson; and his father-in-law, Micheal Martin. He was deeply loved by his extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald F. Wonders, and his mother-in-law, Kathryn Martin.
Don lived life with passion and purpose. He was an active member of the Stockers Car Club, where he served as president for many years and took great pride in his two collector cars. He enjoyed building model cars and planes, and was also a member of a single action shooting society, Shaketails. Don loved to cook, was a ham radio operator, and spent many years involved in scouting. He loved the outdoors—camping, fishing, and hunting—and treasured time spent with his family above all else. One of his greatest joys was attending baseball games with his grandson, Danny.
Don will be remembered as a kind-hearted, loving, funny, and devoted man. He was hardworking, loyal, and determined—a true fighter with a gentle and sweet spirit. Among his many friendships, especially within the car club, he was known for his familiar and well-loved saying: “Keep the shiny side up.”
His legacy is one of love, strength, and unwavering dedication to those he cared about most. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
