His life began on the west side of Colorado Springs with a dog named Mack and ended on the west side of Colorado Springs with a dog named Cool Hand Luke. The years in between were filled with great adventures.
He was born May 28, 1940 to Boyd and Lorraine Huffman. He was the oldest of 3. As a child, he lived in a castle (Miramont), ran as fast as his “tenny runners” would let him, and lived to say “rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated” after being hit by a truck and critically injured.
As a young man, he lived in Walden, CO with his beloved Granddad. He spent his time working in the sawmill, driving fast cars with friends, and fishing. He also met a young woman who would figure predominantly in his life forever.
He moved to Denver to work as a truck driver. There he met and married his first wife. They moved back to Colorado Springs where he became a patrolman with the Colorado Springs Police Department, retiring in 1990. He had three daughters: Maralee, Gayle, and Patricia-who he joked made his hair turn gray and fall out. But to their delight he would bring home stray animals, mini donuts and Honey Buns, and impart his wisdom on cars, sports, and fishing.
In 2000, the young woman from his teenage years would become his Leap Day bride bringing with her a new son and daughter. Jerry and Kay spent years travelling for fun. Or to bowling tournaments they competed in. Or to sporting events to see their grandsons play.
He was an avid bowler winning many awards. A collector of classic cars-his last being a ’51 Chevy named Stinky. A fisherman who loved to “beat the water” for trout. Jerry was a good man who never met a stranger. A dedicated and professional policeman who went above and beyond to help all he encountered. A loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Kay, four daughters, one son, five grandsons, one granddaughter, two sisters, and his much loved dog.
Jerry’s life was cut too short by dementia that robbed him of his joy. But true to form he didn’t let it tell him what to do and he went gently into the future on his own terms.
Jerry hated funerals! He said he’d never attend another one—not even his own—so there will be no services. He will return to Walden to be united with his mother and grandparents.
Donations can be made in his memory to Colorado Springs Police Protective Association, 516 Tejon St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. On the memo line please write: CSPPA-FoRF- Jerry Huffman
He will be missed.
