Gertha Williams

Gertha Mae Williams, 79, an over 54 year resident of Colorado Springs passed away shockingly and unexpectedly of natural causes on July 20, 2100. Gertha was born May 4, 1932 in Dubach, Louisiana to Calvin and Zera (Mayfield) Powell. She was the fifth of eight children. Gertha, who always spoke her mind, was always a good student. She went to Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA to pursue her love of education. There she met Thomas A. Williams, who was also a student. After her graduation, Thomas and Gertha were joined in holy matrimony April 17, 1957. Soon after, Thomas, in the Air Force now, was stationed to Colorado Springs. Gertha, teaching in Homer, LA joined him in 1958. 1959, daughter Thela was born. 1960, the little family was stationed to the Island of Crete. Gertha, now taught kindergarten to the American children and English to the Greek children on the island base. Because there was no hospitals in Crete, Gertha delivered 2 children in Tripoli, Libya. 1961 Thomas Jr. (Andy) and Mary 1964. 1965, stationed back in Colorado Springs the family stayed for good. 1967, Lisa was born.. Gertha taught throughout Colorado Springs till she found her home at Sproul Jr. High. She taught from 1971 -1994. In her spare time, Gertha enjoyed substitute teaching, painting, cooking, gardening, and playing guitar. She loved running into former students and their children, whom she would call her grand-students. Gertha was a devoted longtime member of Holy Family now St. Dominic Catholic Church. Gertha was preceded by her parents, loving husband, 2 sisters, 3 brothers. She is survived by her 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters of Oakland CA, 2 sister-in-laws of Lake Charles, LA. Host of nieces and nephews and dear friends. Gertha was greatly loved and will be missed dearly. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 5354 S. HWY 85/87, Security, CO 80911. A reception will follow after service.
