Harriet (Lucille) Janeway Kidd passed away under the care of Pikes Peak Hospice on January 19, 2016 at the age of 86. She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, William Ogden Kidd, Jr. and is survived by her three sons: Steven (Anne), Jeffrey (Janice), and Ron (LeeAnn). In her naturally playful way she often said, “It takes a good bit of humor to raise three boys.”
Harriet was born in Cushing, Oklahoma on December 19, 1929. After her high school graduation in Stillwater OK, she moved with her parents, Harold and Ruth (Harvey) Janeway, to Dallas, Texas where Harriet attended Southern Methodist University. There she met her husband and soul mate; love-struck, Harriet and Ogden joyfully swept down the aisle on March 17, 1951. In 1970, they moved their three boys to Colorado Springs.
Daughter of a church organist, Harriet’s love of music led her to the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church (FUMC), to which she lent her alto voice for over 43 years. The musical matriarch was consistently a patron of local music and inspired her entire family to sing and play prolifically. She abundantly supported her five grandchildren, attending numerous concerts and events in their growing years: Melissa (Kevin), Nathaniel (Sarah), Daniel (Erin), Jonathan, and Emma; one great grandchild, Madeleine, and two more great-grands scheduled to join the family before summer.
She is also survived by her sister, Pattie (David) and her three nephews Bill, Tom, and Matt. A constant and devoted friend, Harriet maintained relationships from all periods of her life. Befittingly adjacent to her devotion to faith and family, Harriet found great fulfillment in the service organizations to which she devoted herself. She volunteered with the Assistance League, maintained an active involvement in PEO, and was a member of the Women’s Circle and Kerygma Sunday School Class at FUMC.
Harriet’s mission in life is complete. She has gone home and will be missed by all whose lives she has touched. We expect there will be an alto chair for her in the heavenly choir and she will enjoy singing for eternity.
A service to celebrate Harriet’s life will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 2pm in the First United Methodist Church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, the Music Department at First United Methodist Church, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic or a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements under the direction of Swan-Law Funeral Directors, Colorado Springs, CO.
