James (Jim) W. Souturas, loved husband, father and Papou passed away on June 14, 2023 at his home in Colorado Springs. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio on April 11, 1950 to William J. Souturas and Rosemary K. Dawson.
Jim graduated from Poland Seminary High School in Poland, Ohio in 1968. He worked, attended Kent State in Ohio and then served in the US Air Force. In the 1970’s, Jim moved to Colorado and worked in construction until finding his path in the manufacturing industry where he worked in management. He worked at Statitrol and Staodynamics in the Denver area and moved to Colorado Springs in 1988 to accept a management job at Western Forge, maker of Craftsman tools for Sears. He retired in 2009 and then joined the start-up team at Vestas, a Danish wind turbine manufacturing company. He worked there until he was diagnosed with ALS in 2012.
Family was so very important to Jim and he enjoyed celebrating every special occasion or making ordinary occasions special. He was our protector, teacher, fix-it guy and showed us how to beat the odds given him with ALS. He loved gambling trips, exercise-including weightlifting, skiing and video games. He was a huge fan of the Broncos, Steelers and KU Jayhawks basketball.
He belonged to APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society) and taught classes on these subjects. After his ALS diagnosis, he was a member of the ALS Association-Rocky Mountain Chapter. Jim also participated in a spinal cord injury research study at the Denver VA hospital.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and Rich Asher, who he thought of as a son. He is survived by his devoted wife Linda; his cherished daughter Nicole (Brian Breed); loving grandchildren, Katelyn (Dain) Schmidt, Kenzie (Kenneth) Brown, Kristopher (Marissa) Strouts and Kourtney (Gavin Enloe) Strouts; great-grandchildren Rayleigh J, Rayleigh K and Barrett along with his sister Carol (Jerry) Blevins; Guy Asher, who was a bonus son; sisters-in law Cheryl Loomer, Carol Maggard, Diane Caselman and several close cousins, nieces, nephews and friends throughout his life.
A private remembrance will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association-Rocky Mountain Chapter, the Humane Society or any veteran related charity of your choice.
