John was born to Annette Marie Cleaveland and John David “Dave” Riggs. He was fortunate to have both a loving stepfather, Terry Cleaveland, and stepmother, Tomi Yamazaki.
Johnny was blessed with many siblings and a large family: Amy Berg (Jason), Sean Cleaveland (Sarah), Ashley Van McClennahan, Taylor Cleaveland (Ashley), and Conner Cleaveland. He was an uncle to nine nieces and nephews and a great-uncle to one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Riggs and John T. Smith, and his uncle, Ricky Smith. He held a special place in his heart for his grandmother, Marie A. Smith, with whom he spent many years. He also dearly loved his Grammie, Evelyn Riggs; his Aunt Kim and Uncle Joe Dallalio; and his cousins, Bobby Dallalio and Callie Hughes (Seth). Johnny’s dog Aisha was never far from his side and was deeply loved.
Johnny was known for his careful attention to detail, a quality that showed through both his work and his hobbies. He had a passion for cooking and found joy in making meals for others. His professional journey began at Wild Wings and Things, continued at the Mission Inn, and later at Peak Bowl. He eventually worked alongside his brother Sean at two different companies, something he valued greatly.
Following in his father Dave’s footsteps, Johnny enjoyed building RC models and went on to create many other types of models over the years. He was an avid gamer and anime fan, a fish-tank enthusiast, and loved snowboarding with family and friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his brothers and friends. He appreciated great food, especially sushi. He adored electronica and drum & bass music. One of his favorite places was Red Rocks Amphitheater, a venue he visited many times. Johnny also took great pride in his car, often handling maintenance and upgrades himself.
Johnny will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Awakening Church, located at 3445 Oro Blanco Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80917, on January 3, 2026, starting at 11:00 am.
