She is survived by her Daughter Kate Sullivan and son in law, Robert D’Zuro, and two stepsons, Dennis and Brian Sullivan.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Charles E. Sullivan. A dear friend, Sandy Smith, enriched her life and was with her at the end.
Marie taught in District 11 for most of her adult life and was renowned for her hilarious approach to sex education and her unwavering belief that every child needs a dose of science. Administered with a teaspoon of sugar and some tough love, her students adored her classes. Her colleagues were bemused, entertained, and occasionally disgusted by her labs that involved mud microscopy and cow eyes, each lab injected with enthusiasm and awe for nature. Her awe for nature led her to many exotic vacations where she avidly explored quirks of the animal kingdom and embraced the study of scat. Only a select few were privileged to hear her impressive lecture on giraffe poo. She taught many student teachers and instilled compassion, scientific rigor, and a prescription for fun as part of her teaching ethos. She touched so many lives through her love of teaching.
At her request, there will be no formal services, however, a life celebration will be held August 10 at 2pm at Ivywild school (Gymnasium), 1604 S. Cascade Ave and there is a rumor of a special Halloween party on Topaz in her memory this year.
As a teacher and advocate for teachers, she has designated the Foundation for District 11 for any donations (https://foundationford11.com).
