Marvin L Oltmann

Marvin L. Oltmann passed away December 1, 2018 in Colorado Springs. He was born April 9, 1938 in Christian County, Illinois to Milton and Wilma Oltmann, who are deceased. He is survived by his wife, Doris (Sue) Oltmann; his sons, Jeff (Phyllis) Oltmann and Eric Oltmann; and his daughter, Melissa (Jerry) Hoepner. His grandchildren are Eric Oltmann II and Quinn Hoepner. He also leaves his sister, Joyce (Herb) Grieves, brother Philip (Doris) Oltmann, close cousins, and all their families.

Marv was proud to have grown up on a farm. He enjoyed telling stories about his farm life as a boy, such as when he and his friends played cowboy round-up with the milk cows on some Sunday afternoons. They had fun, but his father did not enjoy the poor milk yield those nights.

Marv graduated from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. Later he was a graduate of one of the first classes to receive the new MBA in Information Systems degree from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He worked in civil service for the Navy and the Air Force in Indianapolis, San Bernardino, and Colorado Springs. The rich military presence in Colorado Springs provided him the opportunity to work in many positions.

Church and family were very important to Marv, and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was proud to be a founding member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs in 1965. From the founding until his death he worked hard for Holy Cross in many areas, including lay leadership positions and the Bread of Life food pantry.

Marv enjoyed the out-of-doors, solved world and local problems with friends over a cup of coffee, and loved to just “go.” He enjoyed travel, whether it was a simple drive in the mountains or a trip to Europe to visit distant relations. He learned the skills of self-sufficiency as a farm boy, so as an adult he was a skilled handyman. He carried out many projects in his home of 53 years, including designing and building a large addition. He learned to program and use computers when computers were rare, and after retirement he spent many hours battling with his home computer. They never became close friends.

Marv stayed faithful to his Lord and Savior all his life.

A memorial service and reception will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 13th at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Bread of Life Food Pantry at Holy Cross, 4125 Constitution Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909-1688.
