

following a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on August 1,1940 in
Wayne, Nebraska to Everett and Lydia Witte. She went to school in Winside, Nebraska
graduating high school in 1958. She then went to nursing school at Nebraska Methodist
Hospital where she earned her RN and went to work at the hospital.
She married Thomas Porter on September 24, 1961 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Winside, Nebraska. They moved to Colorado Springs in 1962 and Mary worked as an
RN at Memorial and Penrose Hospitals. They have two children, Lisa Porter and
Michael Porter and two grandchildren Joshua George and Mariah George.
Mary was a long time active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She
developed a very special prayer ministry with “Prayer Shawls.” She crocheted
hundreds of shawls and delivered them to members in need of prayer. She also served
as wedding coordinator and was active in UMW.
Mary was always active in the community. She volunteered at the Cheyenne
Mountain Zoo as a docent, guiding kids on tours, and led school children on hikes at
Palmer Park and the Garden of the Gods. Mary was very involved and interested in
Stephen Ministries. She was a leader and taught classes for new members and had
several people that she ministered to. Mary was a productive volunteer at the Marian
House Soup Kitchen for 25 plus years and proudly ran the Monday Family Room
providing lunch and toys for families and kids. She was also an active member of the
Emboiderer’s Guild of America.
Mary always enjoyed time with friends, having lunch, crocheting and playing bridge.
Most of all Mary enjoyed being a part of all the activities and accomplishments of her
grandchildren. Mary always brought a smile to your face and warmed your heart.
Please join in celebrating Mary’s life on March 25th at 1pm at St. Paul’s United
Methodist Church. Reception following the service. If you were honored with one of
Mary’s prayer shawls, please wear it to the celebration.
