

Nancy Cara Baggs, a native Coloradoan, died on February 9, 2025. She was born in Denver, Colorado on June 1, 1937, to George Edward Baggs and Ruth Hicks Baggs, moving to Colorado Springs in 1946 and attending fourth grade at Steele Elementary School. After graduating from Colorado Springs High School in 1955, she attended Colorado College for her Bachelor of Science degree proceeding on to the University of Colorado in Boulder for her Master’s Degree in Mathematics. Her early teaching career took place at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. After two years in Wyoming, she secured a position at the growing local UCCS in Colorado Springs, in the Mathematics Department where she taught until retirement in 1999. During here career she developed a reputation in the engineering department as an excellent mathematics teacher receiving the inaugural Instructor of the Year Award in May 1996.
As a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Colorado Springs, Nancy volunteered in the Church Library, serving first in partnership with her mother and then making it her sole responsibility. During this time a Children’s Library was added. She was a member of the UWF (United Women of Faith) in the Nightingale Circle and a member of the Berean Class.
Nancy enjoyed working with her hands and made cross stitch needlepoint wall hangings for her family: “The Lord’s Prayer,” “The 23rd Psalm,” “Footprints,” and “Bless This House.” She loved dogs having in the course of her lifetime Judy, Jerry, Tuppence and Heidi before health challenges prevented her from ownership of a dog. She played the piano and with a friend they presented to family and friends a home piano recital enjoyed by all.
Nancy is survived by a sister-in-law Janice Baggs, nephew Steve Baggs (Diane), niece Marilue Beverly (Jeff) of Colorado Springs and niece Karen Dripps (Dave), of Marietta, GA. She also leaves behind to celebrate her life great nephews and nieces, Tyler, Michael, Rachel, Alyssa, Josh, Matthew and Andrew and great-great nephew Everett and great-great nieces Emory and Eloise. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Ruth Baggs, brother Charles “Chuck” Baggs, grandparents Charles and Cara Baggs and Lester and Nancy Hicks.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on February 20, 2025, at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.
