Richard Jay Sutherland [Dick] was born in Shenandoah Iowa July 21 1924 to Edna and Jay Sutherland.
Dick graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1942. His family moved to Colorado Springs looking for work and Dick joined the US Navy in 1943. Dick and Mary [ Bunny] Aitken from Colorado Springs were married May 3rd 1945 while Dick was on leave from the Navy. He joined the Colorado Springs Police force for nine years.
Dick enjoyed sports, hunting & fishing in his younger years. After becoming a life member of the elks lodge he was honored to be the exalted ruler of the BPOE 309 Elks lodge in Colorado Springs from 1970-1971.
He retired from General Adjustment Bureau working as a agent for in insurance claims for 31 years.
He leaves behind sister Doris Manley and brother Jim Sutherland ;His two sons Jack Sutherland and wife [Pat] of Port Townsend Washington and Mark Sutherland who recently married Virginia Copperthite. Also 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and lots of nieces and nephews. He was married 69 years to Bunny who passed away 7 months ago.
Cremation has taken place.
Dick will be laid to rest at Shrine of Remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the PBO Elks charity or Pikes Peak Hospice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Swan-Law Funeral Directors.
