Susan Campbell Bohmer Tyson died peacefully on March 15, 2025. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the Broadmoor Community Church.
Sue was born on September 28, 1936, in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Charles William Bohmer, Jr. and Eleanor Stevens Bohmer. She had one sister, Nancy B. Thomsen, who preceded her in death. As a child, Sue enjoyed horseback riding and was captain of her field hockey teams. She also developed a lifelong love of music and the arts. She sang in the First Presbyterian Church choral choir and enjoyed piano and dance lessons. She continued singing with the Broadmoor Community Church choir for many years.
Sue was graduated from Kent Place School in 1954 and received her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College in 1958. While at Kent Place School, friends introduced her to Charles Wesley Tyson, Jr. and on June 21, 1958, Sue and Wes were married, living in Cambridge, MA while Wes completed his master’s degree. In 1959, they moved to New Jersey where their two daughters, Kimberley and Lauren, and their son, Dwight, were born. Sue, Wes and their children lived in Plainfield and Westfield, New Jersey as well as Glenwood Springs and Boulder, Colorado before settling in Colorado Springs in 1970 where she and Wes helped found the Skyway Association.
Always active in her community, Sue focused her considerable energies on the arts and education. Sue was an avid supporter of the Fine Arts Center, serving as President of the Members Volunteers Association and, for 22 years, as Chair of the Advisory Board. In recognition of her work, she was presented with the FAC’s “Living Treasure” Award in 2007. She served in multiple leadership positions with the Debutante Ball, including Chairman and Honorary Chairman. Monies raised by the annual event provided funds for new acquisitions at the FAC. Locally, Sue was a member of the board of directors for the Pikes Peak Arts Council as well as the Arts, Business and Education Committee. Regionally, she served on the Colorado Council on Arts & Humanities, lobbying state politicians for funding for the arts. Sue co-founded and was president of the Performing Arts for Youth Organization which annually provided over 200 high quality performances to over 80,000 children in the Pikes Peak region.
Sue was always active in her children’s lives, serving as a Girl Scout troop leader and an elementary school room mother. She was President of the Colorado Springs School Parent’s Association. Sue was co-chair of Smith College’s Alumnae College of the Rockies program entitled “The Dilemma of the Environment.” She served on the college’s National Alumnae Admissions Committee and was a Special Director of the Alumnae Association. One of her concerns was ensuring the college was accessible to young women of diverse backgrounds. She was a trustee of Broadmoor Community Church and served as its Secretary for several years. Following her beloved Wes’ death in 1998 after 40 years of marriage, she remained active in her church and community enjoying her memberships in the Women’s Literary Club and the Tuesday Club until a few years before her death.
