William John Burkhardt (July 2, 1946 – December 22, 2025) was a devoted husband, father, educator, and lifelong lover of music and model railroading. He was married to the love of his life, Alice Jean Burkhardt, for 56 years.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania to William and Dorothy Burkhardt, he grew up in the village of Treichlers, PA, and graduated from North Hampton Area High School, where he earned a coveted spot in the historic Allentown Marine Band. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching Instrumental Music from Ottawa University in 1969 and then devoted 32 years to nurturing young musicians in Pueblo School District 60. Each year he guided roughly 500 students, organized heartfelt concerts at five schools, offered private violin and guitar lessons, and championed the Suzuki violin method for children as young as five.
A passionate model‑railroad hobbyist, Bill turned a room in his home into an elaborate HO‑scale train village and, in retirement, traveled the country sharing his treasured railroad antiques and prints at train shows. He was a steadfast supporter of his children and was present at every sporting, musical, and school event they undertook. Bill also cared lovingly for his partner, Alice Jean Burkhardt, during her long illness, extending the same compassion he gave his students and friends.
Bill’s generous spirit was evident through his long‑standing service to the community. He began attending and volunteering at Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1983, where he later founded and directed the bell choir, occasionally led the main choir, and served as a deacon.
He is survived by his children, Melissa Burkhardt‑Shields and Forrest Shields of Colorado Springs, Todd and Jen Burkhardt of Centennial, Colorado; his four beloved grand‑dogs, Sadie, Bella, Ryder, and Daly; his brother‑in‑law David Thrasher and his wife Barb Thrasher of Lamar, Missouri; and his dear niece Tai Thrasher McCoy and her husband Brandon McCoy of Ozark, Missouri. He will also be missed by many extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness, generosity, and love.
A joint celebration of life for Bill and his beloved Jeanie, who passed away earlier this year, will be held on January 17 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 220 West 10th St. Pueblo, Colorado. In loving memory of Bill and Jeanie, we invite you to honor them in whatever way brings you the greatest comfort and joy.
