Rich and I have such wonderful memories of our meeting in Columbus, Ohio in 2015 at the Welsh Gymanfa Ganu! Finding family after so many years truly was a gift! Our love and thoughts are with you, Nidia! Edwin, we know that one day we will all meet again, and it will be glorious!

  In Vietnam, I witnessed pure kindness of Ed,  He is my hero

Dr. Vyhmeister was my teacher, mentor, partner and friend.  He had helped a lot of people … patients, students, residents and colleagues.  The world seems a little dimmer and harsher now that he is gone.  Goodbye temporarily … for we grieve but as others. We will see you soon, our mentor and friend. 


Ed was one of those fellows that you just enjoyed knowing. We became acquainted while he was in heart surgery training and I was in general surgeon training at LLU.

We also served in Greece as part of the LLU Heart surgery team.  I learned a lot of surgery skills from Ed, but life skills such as humility and humor. 

Sometimes his humor was unintentional, as his command of English  was  not  great when he first arrived in the US. I remember him telling me that Nidia had arrived from Argentina much faster than he, because she flew on the airline but it took him a lot longer to get here because he had to bring stuff and travel on a “sheep“!    

Another time they were in New York to get supplies for their hospital back home. Ed was becoming more frustrated by the moment as he tried to talk by phone to the rude lady at the supply company. She was very impatient with Ed, and would not cooperate at all. He would ask her to speak more slowly because he could not understand, but she would just get irritated with him and hang up.   After several failed attempts to communicate, in desperation he asked Nidia to talk to the impatient lady.  So Nidia called her again and after a few seconds of talking with the lady she burst out laughing, as the Lady said   “This is a recording.   The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please hang up and try your call again. Click.”

Ed’s communication barriers did not seem to resolve with the decades. One time he was on vacation in Spain , thinking, this is great, they speak my language. He stopped a policeman to ask directions, and in perfect Chilean Spanish he said “ Which way is Central Park“     The man replied “I’m sorry, I do not speak English“

Ed was an exemplary human being. He was a living embodiment of the biblical admonition “what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”

I will treasure the time we shared. Rest In Peace.

Dr V was my mentor.  
The surgical techniques he taught me have helped countless patients and I have passed them to hundreds of trainees. What a legacy!!
I was so fortunate to have him in my life. 
He was not only a perfect role model as a physician, but he was the kindest man. Always with a beautiful, happy smile. 
I never saw him angry. 
He was not judgmental.
 I will never forgive him

We will always remember the wonderful weekend we spent with you and your family at the Welsh Festival in Columbus! Although we had just met for the first time, we felt we had known you all for a long time. Our times together continue to be favorite memories which we will cherish always.
