Una Verdadera madre
 (Elegía a Hortensia García, Septiembre 27, 2012)
 Con el amor de Carlos, su hijo
 
“Gracias” a toda la familia y a los amigos que trataron con mucho cariño a mi mamá a través de los años, en forma muy especial a mi esposa Deborah y a mis hijos; a Horlup, Vanessa y Dulce por mostrar tanto apoyo y amor por mi mamita.
 También en forma especial, a Hugo, Carolina, Paola y Huguito; a Beto y Norma; a Gastón y Ofelia; a Ana Lilia, Rosalinda y sus hermanas; a Martucha, Celia, Ezequiel y familia; a tía Rufis, a tía Irma, a tía Celia, a Luis y Vianey, a Arturo… y a tantas muchas otras personas que colaboraron con su tiempo y su gran cariño. Por favor perdónenme si olvido mencionar el nombre de alguien.
 Mi mamá tenía su propio destino, cuyo ciclo se ha terminado. Creo yo, que su verdadero destino era el de ser madre… una verdadera madre.
 Sí, ella fue una gran hermana, una gran hija, una gran esposa, amiga, ama de casa, una gran profesionista y realizadora.
 Sí, ella fue ciudadana americana la mayor parte de su vida y únicamente en forma reluctante llegó a ser ciudadana americana en una tapa tardía de su vida.
 Sí, ella fue como una embajadora de México, siempre defendiendo sus raíces.
 Ha sido motivo de una gran alegría para ella el regresar para acá para estar acompañada de la tanta familia que ella amaba muchísimo.
 Ha sido una hermosa bendición para ella el haber tenido la oportunidad de decirles Adiós a todos ustedes, aquí en su México.
 Sí, ella ha significado muchas cosas para muchas personas. Pero yo creo que, el destino de ella era el de compartir su profundo amor de madre.
 Algunas veces, ella platicaba de lo grandiosa e interesante que había sido su vida entera, platicaba que había visto la invención de la lavadora eléctrica, de la lavadora de trastes, las planchas eléctricas y las televisiones; vivió durante una guerra mundial, los automóviles modernos y los autos eléctricos, la llegada del hombre a la luna, los viajes a Marte, la invención de la computadora, los teléfonos celulares, el internet, las video conferencias, el “skype”, el envío inalámbrico de textos, las “iPads” entre muchos otros descubrimientos tecnológicos y cambios culturales. Pero nada es comparable a lo maravilloso que resultó ser su alma… el destino de ser una verdadera madre.
 Pero, yo creo que más que otra cosa, ella tenía el corazón de una madre: de una gran madre, no una madre “de la nueva era” como se definiría hoy en día, sino una madre con la fuerza y los valores suficientes para poder sostenerse en ellos.
 Ella no crió hijos para arrojarlos de casa cuando ellos cumplieran los 18 años de edad. Cada uno de los pequeños que trajo a casa, siempre supo que ella estaría allí para completar juntos todas las jornadas. Ella era su madre aun siendo adultos, y si ellos no lo comprendían de esta manera era como si todos perdieran algo, pero de ninguna manera, la intención de ella.
 Ella ayudó en la crianza de los hijos de mi hermano, de los vecinos y de los amigos. Tanto así, que muchos veían a nuestra familia como su segunda familia. Llegaron a decir que deseaban ser parte de “una verdadera familia”.
 Ella se aseguraba de que todos tuvieran qué vestir, y simplemente no cualquier ropa. La que ella no podía comprar, la confeccionaba. Era una gran costurera.
 Ella se aseguraba que todos tuvieran qué comer, y simplemente no cualquier comida. Cocinaba una gran variedad de comida, y usualmente lo suficiente para alimentar a todo un ejército; sobraba muchísimo.
 Ella hacía las cosas, como debiera siempre hacerlas, una verdadera madre.
 Ella enseñaría una y otra vez, y una vez más, las buenos modales a la mesa y las buenas costumbres de conversación; lo suficientemente buenos como para poder estar uno, en la mesa con presidentes y no sentir incomodidad. Si no aprendíamos la lección, era como si todos hubiésemos perdido algo, pero de ninguna manera la intención de ella.
 Ella enseñaba pulcritud y limpieza, la personal y de la casa y la de mantener ordenado tu medio ambiente; para que así descansaran y revigorizaran nuestras mentes.
 Ella te daba todo cuanto necesitaras, pero no cualquier cosa que tú quisieras; como cualquier madre debiera hacerlo.
 Ella te dará consecuencias cuando tú hicieras cosas malas; como cualquier madre debiera hacerlo.
 Ella, a veces, cuando tú hicieras cosas estúpidos, contigo será generoso, clemente y misericordioso. Demostrando ese amor que todos saben es atención verdadero
 Ella claro que NO te daba cuanto dinero tú quisieras, para hacer lo que tú desearas hacer con él, sobre todo cuando ella bien sabía que lo gastarías tontamente en cualquier cosa. Ella te hacía trabajar un poco para que te lo ganaras. Te hacía prometer que lo gastarías en forma inteligente… como una madre debe hacerlo.
 Ella se erguía y decía cosos duras a las personas si con ello las hacía entrar en razón, evitando el confrontamiento. El confrontamiento fue siempre su último recurso para que alguno de sus hijos entrara en razón.
 Al crecer sus hijos y ya como adultos, ella sorteaba las dificultades aconsejando cosas como: “pues ¡cásate!”, “¡consigue trabajo!”, “¡se honesto!”, “¡se diligente en tu trabajo!”, “¡obedece los Diez Mandamientos!”, “¡manten limpia tu casa!”, “¡se decente y viste bien!”. Sus hijos eran sus hijos aun siendo adultos. Aún cuando ya los dejó ir completamente libres al mundo en que vivimos. Ella siempre tuvo el corazón de una verdadera madre.
 Poco antes de morir, ella expresó: “Creo en Dios y él me cuidará”. Se que ello es verdad.
 Su destino estaba atado a su fe, una fortísima fe que más de una vez fue puesta a prueba en nuestro mundo. Su fe le dio la fortaleza necesaria para permanecer firme en contra de la cultura americana que ha dado por desaparecer las tradiciones familiares. Su fe le dio la fortaleza necesaria para permanecer firme en contra de las malas ideas que pervierten a los hijos que tanto ama. Solamente su gran fe en Dios podrían explicar su constante e imbatible “corazón de madre” para continuar con el cuidado y corrección de sus hijos. Lo cual hacía con amor, el amor de Dios, el cual requiere de una buena cantidad de responsabilidad en la vida.
 Ella aprendió bien su fe, no fue engañada con ideas raras o extrañas. Por ejemplo: ella sabe que ella nos es “una bola de energía” yéndose al universo, ella sabe que no se convertirá en “un ángel en el cielo”, ella sabe que su existencia no es como “una nube en el aire que desaparece con el viento”, ella sabe que no va a ser una “alma maravillosa” perdida en la tierra. No, ella es una criatura del Señor que sabe que su alma ascenderá al cielo para estar con Jesús y todos los santos.
 Ella dio amor, pero no la clase de amor que nuestra vida moderna describe como amor libre. Ella sabe que el amor a veces duele y que a veces pide mucho más de nosotros. Ella dio “amor verdadero” y nos pedía ser fuertes, con mucha fe y responsables. Y si alguno de los que tuvieron la suerte de ser sus hijos no se daba cuenta del porqué se sentían tan cariñosamente tratados por ella, entonces era porque no comprendían que lo que obtenían era “algo verdadero”, el “amor verdadero” que ella daba. Esa era su intención: dar verdadero amor, como una madre lo debe hacer.
 Todos sabemos que el “amor verdadero” es más que solamente una idea o un sentimiento, sino Dios mismo. Por lo que si existe una herencia perdurable, es la de que, ella conoce a Dios mismo, lo cual ha compartido con todos y cada uno de cuantos la conocimos. Ella compartió eso: el “verdadero amor” de una madre…
 Belleza, sabiduría y fe.
 Gracias Dios, porque ella fue una gran bendición sobre nosotros.

 La verdad es poderosa y ella siempre quiso ser parte de la verdad.
 El plan de Dios tiene su propio tiempo, ella siempre aguardó a que llegara ese momento.
 El plan de Dios siempre es bueno, y como muchas generaciones de familias antes que ella, ella también lo aprendió.
 El plan de Dios lo cubre todo y a todos. Ella sabía que habría momentos negros y oscuros, pero que al final, también habría grandes y brillantes recompensas.
 Ella sabía que necesitaba ser fuerte, valiente e inteligente a través de todo ello. Y que habría belleza al final.
 Ella nunca presionaría por amor antes de la hora. Ella sabía que lo bello está en la preparación de la novia a su prometido.
 Las esperanzas de mamá están por encima de aguardar grandes recompensas. Por favor, continuemos a decir una oración por ella.

A True Mother
Eulogy for Hortensia Garcia, October 15 2012

My mom got very sick in Mexico while on her last visit there. She ended up spending about 3 weeks in the hospital before God called her home. It has always been an amazing thing to witness how much the family loved her and how they would come to see her.
While in the hospital nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews would all take turns to care for her. She was never alone. 24/7, around the clock rotating shifts, she would have family members staying with her, loving her, talking with her, and helping her. They gave up work time, family time, and made long bus trips to express their love. 
Over the years my wife, Deborah, made a commitment to take care of her here, while she was in and out of hospitals, emergency rooms and doctors' visits, and hospital stays. All in the name of love, the family tried to keep her as happy as possible, never leaving her alone. 
I would like to thank them all again for their help over the years:

My mom had a destiny and it is completed. I think her destiny was to be a mother… a real mother.
Yes, she was a great daughter, sister, wife, friend, homemaker, professional & performer over the stretch of her life.
Yes, she was a Mexican citizen most of her life and only reluctantly became a US citizen, late in life.
Yes, she was like an ambassador for Mexico, always defending her roots.
It was a great joy for her to return to be with so much family who she loves so very much in Mexico, and who have expressed their love for her over her entire life.
It was a beautiful grace for her to be able to say goodbye to all of them in Mexico… and an honor for me to be able to bring her home.
Yes, she has been many things to many people, but I think her destiny was to share the love of a real mother.
Sometimes she would talk about how interesting and great her life had been. She would talk about she had seen the invention of the electric washing machine, dishwashers, electric irons, televisions. She lived through a world war, modern automobiles, electric cars, the landing of man on the moon, trips to mars, computers, cell phones, the internet, video conferencing, skytipe, texting, iPads, and so many more technological and cultural changes. But none, compare to the wonders of her soul… a destiny to be a mother. 
But, I think more than any of that, she had the heart of a mother: of a great mother, not a “new age” definition of a mother, but a mother with values and strength to stand by them.
She didn't raise children to leave the house when they were 18.  Any child she brought into her home knew that she would be there for the”long run”. She was a mom to them even as adults, and if they didn't realize that … then it was their loss, not her intention.
She helped raise my brother's children, the neighbor's children, and friend's children. So much so, that many sought out our family as their second family. They would say that they wanted to be part of a “real” family.
She made sure everyone was clothed, but not just any clothes. What she could not afford, she would make. And she was a great seamstress.
She made sure everyone would eat, but not just any meals. She would cook varied meals and usually enough for a small army: lots of left-overs.
She did things like a real mom should do.
She would teach, teach, and re-teach manners at the table, manners in conversation, manners enough so that we could dine with presidents and not feel uncomfortable.  If we didn't learn the lessons it was our loss, not her intention.
She would teach cleanliness, cleaning after yourself, keeping your home neat, and keeping your environment orderly... all so that our minds could rest and be invigorated. 
She would give you what you needed, not whatever you wanted.  Like a mother should do.
She would have consequences when you did wrong things, like a mother should do.
Sometimes, when you did something stupid, she would be generous, forgiving, and merciful. That kind of love that lets you know it is “real caring” for you.
She would NOT give you money freely, to do whatever you wanted to do with it, especially if she knew you were going to spend it foolishly.  She would make you work for it; she would help you save for a good goal.  She would make you promise to use it wisely... like a mother should.
She would stand up and say the hard things to people if it meant they may come to their senses, but sparingly. Confrontation was not her way.  Confrontation would be her last resort to bring a child to their senses.
As her children grew older, as adults, she still brought up the “hard/difficult things”. Saying “Get Married!”, “Get a job!”, “Be honest!”, “Do your work diligently”, “Follow the 10 commandments!”, “Clean your house”, “Be decent and dress nice!”,   Yes, her children are her children even as adults. Even though the world we live in would have her let them go completely, she always had the heart of a real mom.
Before she died she said “I believe in God and I know He will take care of me!”. I know that to be true.
Her destiny was tied to her faith, a strong faith that was tested more than most on the planet. Her faith gave her strength to stand up to an American culture which is bent on separating family traditions. Her faith gave her strength to stand up to bad ideas that perverted her children, who she loves so much.  Only her faith in God could explain her continued and undiminished “heart of a mother” to continue to care and correct her children.  She did it with love, Gods love which requires a certain amount of responsibility in life.
She learned her faith well; she wasn't fooled by strange and wacky ideas.  For example; she knows she is not a “ball of energy” going forward in the universe, she knows she is not going to become an “angel in heaven”, she knows that her existence is not like a “cloud in the air that disappears in the wind”, she knows that she is not going to be a “wondering soul” lost on the earth.  No, she knows she is a Child of God, and knows her soul will go to heaven to be with Jesus and all the saints. She loved being Catholic, and would not sell her faith short.
She gave love, but not the kind of love that our modern age describes as free-love.  She knows that love is sometimes hard and sometimes asks much of us. She gave “real love”, and asked us to be strong and faithful and responsible. And if some of the lucky ones who became her children didn't realize why they felt so enamored by her, and loved by her, then it was because they didn't realize they were getting the “real thing”, a “real” love from her. That was her intention; to give real love, like a mother should.  
We all know that “real love” is more than just an idea or a feeling, but it is God himself.  And if there is an enduring testament to my mom it is that she knows God himself, and has shared that with each of us who knew her. She shared that “real love” of a mom 
Beauty, wisdom, and faith.
Thank you God, for she was a true and real blessing on us all.

The Truth is powerful, and she always wanted to be part of the truth.
Gods plan has its own time, she always waited for the right time.
Gods plan is always good, like many generations of families before her, she learned that too.
Gods plan covers everything and everybody. She knew there would be black-dark-trials, but afterward there would be bright & great-rewards. 
She knew we need to be strong, courageous and smart through it all. And It will be beautiful in the end.
She would never push love before its time. She knew that beauty is in the preparation of a bride for the groom.
Moms trials are over and the great rewards await. Please continue to pray for her.

Carlos and Deborah, God has asked much of you of late and He has also strengthened you in these times of loss. Hortencia has always been in my prayers and she will continue to be as she enters eternity with the promise of God's eternal Love. I am blessed to have known her and the son that she has raised. May God's perfect love for you be the salve that you need to soothe your hearts in this difficult time. All of you are always in my heart and in my prayers. I love you all. Dear Carlos, Deborah, and family,
You have been through so much.  My heart goes out to you.  Carlos, your mom appeared to me to always be a warm, loving person.  May you find comfort in God's Peace and Hope that your mother is in His loving arms.
