

Ruth Anne (Coomey) Hakala passed peacefully in her sleep on Saturday May 23, 2015 in Los Angeles, CA. Ruth was a loving wife, mother, aunt, sister, and grandmother. She was 90 years young and had a zest for life.
Ruth was born on December 12th, 1924 in Worcester, MA to William and Henrietta Coomey.
Ruth and Harold, her loving husband, began their life together on April 4, 1959. Together they loved to spend time with family and friends. Ruth was adventurous and loved to plan and take interesting trips. Ruth was passionate about her family, genealogy and quilting. She belonged to a local genealogy group. On several occasions, Ruth traveled to Utah with the group to conduct research and to learn more about her ancestors. Ruth and Harold made several trips to Ireland with members of her family to visit relatives that she found doing her research. Ruth also belonged to a local quilting group and attended weekend workshops. She made many quilts for the Women’s Shelter and local Veterans and was recognized for her contributions.
Ruth and Harold raised their six children in Highland, CA, and were members of St. Adelaide’s congregation. After retiring from the San Bernardino Unified School District, Ruth and Harold moved to Oceanside, CA where they have lived since 1987 and attended the San Luis Rey Mission.
In addition to her genealogy and quilting activities, Ruth volunteered at Brother Benno’s Thrift Store in Oceanside. Ruth and Harold enjoyed meeting friends for lunch at the Oceanside Senior Center. Ruth loved life, and her family. She is survived by her husband of 56 years Harold, her children - Maureen, James (Debra), Karen (Richard), Michael (Diane), John (Alex), Daniel (Lissa), her stepson Harold “Skip” (Marcia), her sister Shirley Coomey, her many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents William and Henrietta Coomey, her brothers Edward and John “Jack”, her sisters Rita and Eunice, and her granddaughters Ashley and Katrina.
Ruth was a believer in lifelong education and learning. She encouraged all her children and grandchildren to make learning and education a part of their everyday life. Ruth was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was a perfect example of unselfish service and dedication to others. Ruth was an active member of her church. Her family and friends will miss her deeply, and will forever carry her in their hearts.
Ruth will have a Viewing on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 4-8 PM with a Rosary at 6:00 PM and a Funeral Service on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10 AM, both in the Valley View Chapel at Montecito Mortuary. A Private Committal service will take place at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date.
