Eugene Conrad “Pat” Norton passed away peacefully Saturday, January 8, at home. He was 95 years old and lived with his son, Patrick and daughter-in-law Susan. He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Marian Yates who passed in 2001 and a grandson, Christopher Norton who passed in 2003. Pat was the second son of four boys between Mildred J. Anderson and Robert L. Norton. He grew up in Takoma Park, MD in an area known as “Hell’s Bottom,” and spoke of the hardships his family experienced. Born in 1926, the Depression presented financial obstacles for the family that Pat successfully overcame. He worked odd jobs at a young age and contracted histoplasmosis, he believed, while cleaning chicken coups. The disease affected his eyesight which would plague him throughout his life. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and after boot camp at Camp Blanding, FL he was stationed in Hawaii as a clerk since he could “hunt and peck” on a typewriter.
His service as a clerk helped prepare him for what was to become a career in the commercial glass business. He married Marian Yates in 1948 and they had two sons, Patrick in 1950 and Tony in 1955. He worked for David Max & Company in the early years and eventually became a part owner of Capitol City Glass located in S.E., DC. His unbounded work ethic continued as he worked well into his mid 80’s. Work and family were his highest priorities.
He enjoyed dining, fishing, crossword puzzles, and was passionate about collecting coins. Pat spent his later years sorting through his coins, compiling books of coin collections that he could pass on to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and children of acquaintances. He is remembered for his gentle nature, kindness, and generosity. Pat is survived by his two sons, Patrick and Tony and their spouses, Susan, and Sheree. Three grandchildren, Jennifer Norton Glass, Andy Norton, and Kacie Norton and three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Norton, Grayson and Jack Glass.
