
John was born the oldest of two children to Mary (Edith) and Dempsey Hatley in Rogersville, TN on February 10th, 1945. As a young child, John’s family moved to Rockville, MD. He began his career as an auto mechanic. At the age of 24, John transitioned to working in Police Communications for the Montgomery County Police Department. He retired after 18 years of service. He had a passion for serving his community and helping people.
John met his wife, Karen Martin, in 1964 while in High School. They married shortly after graduating high school, and soon after welcomed their first child, Christine. In short time, the family grew to three daughters with the births of Monica and Charlene.
Through the years, John enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling, and especially spending time with his daughters and grandsons. John worked hard to make sure his family was taken care of and felt loved every day. He had a special bond with all his grandsons. He was known for continuously weaving jokes and bringing laughter to those around him. With a heart of gold, he would go to great lengths for the ones he loved.
John lived with Dementia for the last five years of his life. He battled the disease with the most amazing grace, bravery, and strength. He lived everyday with positivity and determination, which was a hallmark of his entire life.
He is survived by three children: Christine Hatley, Monica McLaughlin and her spouse Brian McLaughlin, Charlene Santis and her spouse Jair Santis. His loving grandchildren are John Centeno and his spouse Kristin Centeno, Andre Santis, Joseph Centeno, Jordan Santis and his spouse, Brittany Santis, Jackson Centeno and Jason McLaughlin. His great-grandchildren are Luke Centeno and Emma Santis.
