On the afternoon of 04 February, 2025, Audrey Judy passed away peacefully of natural causes, aged 89. Audrey was being visited and comforted by family members at Lorien Health Services in Mt. Airy, Maryland at the time of her passing.
Audrey Brock was born in the town of Carrsville, Virginia. She was the 5th child (Ryland, Woodrow, James, Edna, Audrey, Mildred, Bob) of Minnie and Linwood Brock. She is survived by Mildred and Woodrow, as well as her three children, Charlie, Kathy, and Jay.
After completing high school, Audrey remained in Virginia for a short time, then moved to Illinois to take a job with an ad agency. While there, she met and married Jorge Vasconez, a student at Northwestern University. Soon after they married, they went to New York City for Jorge’s job with GTE-Sylvania. Within a few years, they left the city for Stamford, Connecticut where Audrey was a full-time homemaker.
With two small children and a third on the way they moved to Puerto Rico for Jorge’s job. They remained in Puerto Rico for several years, during which Audrey supported her children with their school and social activities, including Boy and Girl Scouts, pee wee football, soccer, music, birthday parties, etc., while working at their school library. After their time in the tropics, the family moved to the Chicago suburbs where Audrey began to work full time at a textile company. Audrey and Jorge parted ways in 1980, following which she became an executive secretary for an insurance company.
After a few years, while passing one another as their respective women’s and men’s bowling leagues ended/began each week, Audrey met William “Bill” Judy, a real estate attorney with New York-based F. W. Woolworth Co. Bill had three grown children from a prior relationship. After they married and moved to New Jersey, Bill completed his career as Vice President of Real Estate, while Audrey worked for a hotel in its executive suite.
Audrey and Bill retired and built a beautiful home in a golf community in Western North Carolina. They led active lives for several years, playing golf, tennis, bowling, bocce ball, and bridge. As they began to slow down, Audrey and Bill moved to Williamsburg, Virginia to be closer to Audrey’s family. Their home accommodated regular visits from their six children. Together, Audrey and Bill raised two Shelties, Halle and Heidi. In 2016, Bill passed away, and Audrey moved to a smaller home in Williamsburg.
In 2019, Audrey began to battle cancer. Kathy soon became her primary care giver, helping her persevere through the difficult medical treatment from 2019 until Audrey passed away in 2025. With Kathy, Jay (and wife Maria) living in Maryland, they were able to visit her regularly. Audrey beat cancer, but soon after learned she had pulmonary fibrosis. As that illness took its toll, Audrey moved to Maryland, in assisted living, to be close to Kathy, Jay, and Maria. Maria’s great cooking and frequent visits helped keep a smile on Audrey’s face as she battled the final days of her illness.
Audrey will be remembered for always being “put together” and dedicated to the future. She always encouraged her children to pursue challenges. She was gratified that all three children graduated college and went on to successful careers. Prior to her illnesses, Audrey was happy to sit for her grand-pets when her children travelled. Audrey excelled at establishing order in each new location, as her children often moved to further their careers. She loved classical music and enjoyed decorating each new home in a warm, inviting fashion. Whether playing golf, cards, or simply board games with family members, Audrey was a fierce competitor.
Throughout her life, Audrey remained close to her two sisters, Edna and Mildred. The three of them especially enjoyed gambling trips to various casinos, where they would play the slots, laughing and enjoying each other’s company – even though Audrey usually came out ahead. Audrey made her mark on the assisted living care givers, showing them how she liked her clothes folded, and how she liked her room neat and tidy every day, as if company was coming, regardless of whether anyone was expected.
Witzke Funeral Homes is assisting with private services scheduled for June 7th to allow time for family to travel. Audrey will be interred next to Bill at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to your local Humane Society or animal shelter.
