Beverly was born February 7, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Maurice Edward Kennedy and Ruth Mary (Kenney) Kennedy. She graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School, the class of 1945. She then attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she met Rodman Kabrick; they were married in 1947. Beverly and Rodman moved to Columbia in 1957 when Rodman accepted a faculty position with the University of Missouri. Beverly remained in Columbia for the rest of her life. She earned a License Practical Nurse degree in 1977 and worked at University Hospital and Clinics until 1990. After more than 50 years of marriage, Rodman passed away in 1998. She met Walter Horn in 1999 at a widows/widowers gathering at the Senior Center, and they married later that year. They were married for 11 years until Walter passed away in 2010.
Beverly was involved in her community by serving as the president of the Russell Boulevard School Parent Teacher Association, Boone County Association of Retired Citizens and Boone County Association of Licensed Practical Nurses. She served as vice president of the Fortnightly Club and the League of Women Voters. She was president of the Columbia Civic Orchestra; chairperson of the Fortnightly Epicureans; board member of the Senior Network and the Women’s Symphony League. She helped start a preschool for children with Down Syndrome when her son, Jimmie, was ready to go to preschool and she realized no school existed for children like him.
Beverly had an infectious smile, a kind heart, a great sense of humor, and she loved to laugh. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends and playing bridge. She was particularly fond of her grandchildren and greatly enjoyed visiting with them and watching them grow. She loved her friends and family unconditionally and lived her life without regrets. Regardless of the challenges she encountered in her life, she was unfailingly optimistic and joyful and served as a role model for others who experienced loss.
Beverly is survived by two sisters, Dolores Hance of New Canaan, CT, and Maureen Ryker, of Dousman, WI; her children Elizabeth Kabrick (Paul Chyc) of Longmont, CO; John (Laura) Kabrick of Columbia; her grandchildren Luke Walsh, Joni Walsh, Thomas Kabrick, and Andrew Kabrick; her extended family with Walter including children Richard (Yin) Horn of Tempe, AZ, Wendy Evans of Columbia, Jackie (Dwight) Edwards of Columbia, Michael (Svetlana) Horn of Flagstaff, AZ, Dwight Horn (Michael Massette) of Savannah, GA, and Karla Horn of Flagstaff, AZ; grandchildren Sarah and Stephen Edwards, Josh Evans, Chris and Andy Horn, and Artiom and Max Tizu and several great grandchildren. She also leaves behind close friends including Fred Schwada, and her daily dining companion at the Terrace, Gerald Bramon. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, a daughter, Kathleen, and a son, James.
