Evelyn June “Grandma June” Tipton, 90, passed away on November 14, 2019. A visitation will be held November 18, 2019 at Parkade Baptist Church from 10:00 am – 11:00 am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, MO.
On a farm that is now part of the Vichy Airport in Maries County, June was born to Webster E. and Pearl N. Boyd on December 8, 1928. She grew up in Columbia and attended school there. On October 16, 1946, June was united in marriage to James B. “Jim” Tipton until his passing in 1992 from cancer. To this union were born five children, of which four survive.
June’s great claim to fame was ushered forth in the kitchen where she found her passion in life, feeding people. Especially children. Those skills lead to her being awarded a Master Degree in Cinnamon Rolls from the University of Missouri. That degree hung proudly in the kitchen until just recently. After serving as Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at the CDL class on campus, her cooking fame spread all across the world. Many a parent paid tribute to the fact that their macaroni and cheese was not as good as Grandma June’s.
She is survived by three sons, Wayne, Austin, and Al; daughter, Adajane Burnett; brother, Mark Boyd; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and numerous great step-grandchildren.
June is preceded in death by son, Melvin; beloved husband of 46 years, Jim; mother, Pearl and step-father, Austin C. Wood; father, Webster; and siblings, Robert and Imogine.
Grandma June leaves a legacy of many, many friends and people whose lives have been touched by her love and quick wit. For someone whose highest level of education was a GED obtained only after all her kids had graduated from high school, she had the ability to touch and shape lives one meal at a time.
Go rest high on that mountain, Grandma June, your work on Earth is done.
