Their services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2018 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Missouri. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm on Thursday July 26 at the funeral home. On Monday, July 30, they will be inurned together at 12:00 pm at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery the in Jacksonville, Missouri.
Both George and June were born in Hermann, Missouri. George was born on November 19, 1927 to Walter and Caroline Weisenbach Whertvine and June was born on June 30, 1930 to Florenz and Rose Ann Eggenberg Hillebrand. On May 7, 1949, shortly after George was discharged from the Army, they were married in Hermann, Missouri.
George served in the US Army as a Paratrooper in the 2nd Battalion- G Company 3rd Platoon. June worked at the Observer Newspaper in Linn, Missouri, but was best known for her many years managing the School Cafeteria in Linn. George had a long, successful career with Ameren Union Electric, retiring in 1989 after 39 ¾ years of service.
They were always together, and enjoyed golfing, dancing, and bowling. They were members of several social lodges including the Local VFW #280 and Auxiliary, Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge. George served on the VFW Military Honors Team for decades until his health would no longer allow him to do so.
They are survived by four children, Terry Whertvine of Columbia, Nancy Whertvine (Dennis Noie) of Columbia, Penny (Brian) Coleman of Mexico, MO, Lori (Kent) Knudsen of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Dowell, Amber (Raymond) Kautsch, Michelle (Kenny) Ward, Brian Albin, Trenton Coleman, Jacob Coleman, Joshua Coleman, and Coleman West; and eight great-grandchildren Haylee, Landon, Johnna, Dayson, Zyia, Lillie, Adam and Dylan; June’s sisters, Marilyn Martin of Ashland and Barbara Krull of New Haven; several nieces and nephews along with George and June’s “two thirds” daughter, Tammi McCuskey- Johnson of Columbia.
They were preceded in death by their parents, George’s sister, Janet Lieneke, and four of June’s siblings Milton Hillebrand, Ruth Murta, Audrey McGuire and Marion Rhodes, and their beloved Yorkie, Lacey.
