He was born on July 9, 1949, in Columbia, Missouri, to Marion and Hannahlee (Besgrove) Bridgewater. On September 16, 1967, James married the love of his life, Judy Baker, in Columbia. Together they built a life centered on love and family and were blessed with a daughter, Angelia.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Judy Bridgewater of Centralia; his daughter, Angelia Poff of Centralia; his grandson, Dalton Johannsen of Centralia; as well as other beloved relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wally Schwartz.
James was a devoted sports fan who rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Missouri Tigers, especially during basketball and football season. He was also a loyal supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs.
When he wasn’t watching sports, James treasured time spent outdoors. Hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, particularly when shared with his Uncle Billy Niles and his close friend Joe Kennedy. Whether out on the water, in the woods, or thoughtfully expanding his prized gun collection, these were the moments that brought him peace and lasting happiness.
He had a special love for classic westerns, with Gunsmoke being his favorite. James took great pride in his work and in keeping his yard looking just right, even if that meant mowing it every other day. He loved good food and never missed an opportunity to enjoy a great meal.
Above all, James will be remembered for his dedication to his family and the simple joys that brought him happiness. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services honoring and celebrating James’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri. Arrangements are under the care of Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia.
