A visitation will take place from 12:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019 with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bonne Femme Baptist Church Cemetery. A gathering will be held after the graveside at the Downtown Optimist Clubhouse at 1201 Grand Ave. in Columbia for everyone to gather and share their memories of John.
John was born May 16, 1947 in Boone County, the son of Audley Leon Sapp and Dorothy Strobel Sapp. He was married to Barbara Duncan from 1968 until 1999. On September 17, 2005 in Columbia he was united in marriage to Audrey (Acton) Sapp, who survives.
John graduated from Hickman High School in 1965. He attended the University of Missouri until joining the US Air Force in 1969. He served from 1969 to 1973, including a tour in Vietnam (1971-72) and attained the rank of staff sergeant. John graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Accounting in 1975 and shortly thereafter became a CPA. He worked at a local accounting firm for a few years prior to opening his own firm in the early 1980s. John greatly enjoyed working with his many clients over the years. He was an active member of the Downtown Optimist Club where he organized the Christmas tree lots for many years, and of the Lions Clubs International, in which he served as a District Governor in 1995-1996. John (and Audrey) enjoyed attending Bluegrass festivals, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre productions, Mizzou football games and taking road trips. He was an avid Mizzou Football fan. John dearly loved his wife and his family and serving his community.
John is survived by his wife: Audrey; his children: Catherine Plummer (Patrick) of Sugar Land, TX; Christopher Sapp (Poppy Hirsch) of San Antonio, TX; stepchildren Christina Chaney; Holly Pruitt (William Fuenfhausen); Brandon Pruitt; one sister: Peggy Plummer (Russell) all of Columbia; four grandchildren; fifteen step grandchildren including a great grandson and a host of other relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Downtown Optimist Club in care of the funeral home.
