Joyce’s story began in the quiet countryside of Nebraska, where life was simple and full of wonder on the farm. She often shared memories of riding her horse to a one-room schoolhouse, stories that reflected both her independent spirit and her deep appreciation for where she came from.
She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1952 and continued her education at the University of Nebraska, earning her bachelor’s degree in education in 1956. During those college years, Joyce’s vibrant personality shone brightly—she even hosted her own radio show, something she spoke of with a smile throughout her life.
On October 25, 1957, Joyce married Alan B. Anderson, beginning a loving partnership that would span 68 years. They met at the University of Nebraska. Together, they built a life centered on family and devotion, and were blessed with three children: Barry, Laura, and David.
They moved to Columbia in 1972 where Joyce devoted her career to teaching Speech and English at West Middle School formerly West Jr High. She believed in her students, encouraged them to find their voices, and left a lasting impression on countless young lives.
Her heart for community was evident in all she did. Joyce was a faithful member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church and a dedicated supporter of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She played a meaningful role in helping restart the sorority chapter in Columbia at the University of Missouri, a contribution she held close to her heart.
Joyce had a beautiful creative spirit. She found joy in music, playing both the piano and accordion, and at one time was part of a traveling music show. She also enjoyed completing many art projects around the home and helping her children and grandchildren with their art projects for school. She was always up on the latest fashion and trends keeping her home immaculate and up to date. You would find her outside as well gardening and planting flowers to keep their yard the best on the block.
Above all else, Joyce’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured every moment spent with them, and nothing meant more to her than being “Gigi,” the name lovingly given to her by her great- grandchildren. It was a title she carried with pride and endless love.
