Robert Duncan, 78, of Columbia, MO, passed away on February 14, 2025. He was born in Lusk, WY on December 5, 1946. Robert graduated from Newton High School in Kansas. He received his undergraduate degree from Denison University, his master’s degree from Wichita State University, and his PhD in British History from The Ohio State University.
Robert married Nancy Shaw Duncan on August 10, 1968. He had a 40-year career working for the Social Security Administration, where he spent many years managing the offices in Columbia and Jefferson City. He served as president of the National Council of the Social Security Management Association. Robert was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he served as clerk of session for several terms and was actively involved in many church committees and projects. He loved to fish and found peace in the still wilderness.
Robert and Nancy had two daughters, Amy Duncan and Rachel (Duncan) Netemeyer. They moved to Columbia in 1980 where Robert was involved in many capacities with several community organizations including The United Way, Voluntary Action Center, and Boone County Council on Aging. He enjoyed attending his daughters’ activities and athletic events and was always cheering them on. Robert was a good husband, a great dad, and an all-around wonderful person. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Robert is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters Amy Duncan (Alysia Beaudoin) and Rachel (Duncan) Netemeyer (Eric Netemeyer); and grandchildren Emily and Avery Netemeyer, Maxwell Duncan, and Phoenix Ribiat. His parents preceded him in death.
Robert’s Celebration of Life service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia, MO. The service will also be live-streamed on the Trinity Presbyterian Church Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or The Center Project (centerproject.org).
