Anna Lillie Geter, 93 blessed years; the Matriarch of the [eight] Washington Siblings, has been called home to her resting place on May 6, 2025. Her Beloved husband of 65 years, Pelton Geter, Sr. preceded in death. Other family members that also preceded in death, are her three brothers, Irving (Duke), Norman (Billy), Roy Washington, and sister, Mary Jane Coleman, and grandson, Jonathan Geter. Three surviving sisters, Gloria Marshall, Carolyn Tyler and Janice Washington remain to carry on fond memories.
Anna, was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 12, 1931 to her late parents, William and Anna Washington. Mrs. Anna Geter, has been a proud mother of three: Pelton Geter, Jr., Dr. Norina Geter-Ingram, and Debra Geter-Kirkland. Through her years, she lived in both The Bronx and Brooklyn. Anna & Pelton joyously & proudly purchased their first home (1963) in North Babylon, Long Island; upon her husband’s retirement (1989) they relocated to Palm Coast, Florida. Then upon the passing of her husband, (2013) she moved to reside with her youngest daughter, Debra Geter-Kirkland in Columbia, South Carolina.
She marveled at being surrounded with family. Her joy was loving all of her grandchildren: Crystal, Michelle, Alicia, Brian, and Jonathan Geter (deceased); Earl & Shayna Ingram; Gina Kirkland-Hogan & Keri Kirkland-Hodges. And her precious great-grandchildren: Michael, Isaiah, Brian, and Briana Geter, Kamen, Kennedy, June Hogan, and Jaylen Hodges. Anna’s world was her Beloved family. Anna embarked on a humanitarian deed of caring for foster children that began in 1960. She along with her husband extended their love by embracing two particular foster children: Darryl and Sheila (deceased) Davis. They did so by making the siblings’ part of the Geter Family from ages 7 & 5 up and through their adulthood.
Anna’s life journey entailed her Christian walk with a courageous life-style. She had a vision of what she wanted in terms of being a homemaker with Christian values. She explored her interest greatly in being a socialite and adored having a flare in fashion and home decor. Anna would readily have family over for backyard BBQ’s, holiday gatherings and extended invites to formal affairs and always would plan family road trips. However, all-in-all her focused highlights were always to setting the family standards. She managed her household with an iron fist; a disciplinarian, exceptional housekeeper and family planner.
When the Geter household became an ‘empty nest’ surprisingly Anna decided to breakup her quiet life by becoming a school bus driver. However, when grandchildren begun to enter the Geter world, she welcomed the opportunity to becoming an involved Grandmother. All her energy went into sharing her heart and being a servant to her grandchildren. Her mothering was again sparked to all heights ‘again’. And, to this end, is how she always wanted her legacy to be, a loving, caring, involved, and devoted GRANDMOTHER, in conjunction to the continuous guiding light to her three children.
Anna Lillie Geter, will be laid to rest with her devoted Husband at Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 16, 2025 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Thursday, May 15, 2025 at the funeral home.
