
COLUMBIA – Elton A. “Mac” McWhorter was born in Madisonville, Texas on September 4, 1933 to Carmen Earsel McWhorter and Nelia Strand McWhorter and died on July 6, 2011 at the age of 77. He was educated in the school of Madisonville. After graduating from High School he enlisted in the US Navy where he served for 20 years. A high light of his service was being an instructor of the ROTC program at the University of South Carolina. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict and the Vietnam conflict.
Following his retirement from the Navy he started Jim Ken Nursery. His initial efforts was propagating and selling begonias. Fredna Bartles was his first employee and one of his favorites. From this small venture he developed a full blown nursery and two garden centers. As president and CEO of the organization he propagated and sold thousands upon thousands of shrubs and plants that beautify Columbia and the surrounding areas.
Following his retirement from the nursery business he and his companion, Mavis George, traveled extensively through the states collecting antiques and art work. “Mac” enjoyed listening to classical music. He had a large collection of classical music and he spent many hours listening to his favorite songs.
Mr. “Mac” is survived by his companion, Mavis George; and his beloved dog, Clifford.
Mr. “Mac” appreciated the services of his primary physician, Dr. Jerry Ambrozik; his heart doctor, Dr. Terry Grainger; his attorney and friend, Mr. David Sidden; his tax advisor, Mr. Gee; and his health assistant, Judy Keith. He was very close to his friends Dan Sandel and Warren Sandel who shepherded him through his final years. Kerry Glasser from Tri County and Grace Carnes with Regency Hospice Care provided him with special care that he appreciated.
Funeral services for Elton A. “Mac” McWhorter will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Salem United Methodist Church, 1321 Salem Church Rd., Irmo, SC, where he was a regular attendee as his health permitted. The Rev. Mitch Houston will be officiating. Visitation will be after the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, SC 29902.
