Born in Royston, Georgia, on October 3, 1936, Frances was raised in Hartwell, where she graduated from Hartwell High School. She continued her education at LaGrange College before transferring to the University of Georgia, where she earned her degree. She later moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she devoted her early years to education, teaching Business at Englewood High School. It was there she met her husband, John L. Campbell. The two married in 1977 and made their home in Jacksonville Beach, where they built a life together and became part of the close-knit beach community. Frances was a loving and steady presence, supporting John’s passion for fishing and hunting and embracing the coastal life they shared. She later retired from teaching Business at Fletcher Senior High School in Neptune Beach.
Frances will be remembered for her quick wit and spunky spirit, which brought joy to those around her. While she was known for her serious nature, those closest to her cherished her perfectly timed humor; her clever, understated comments were as surprising as they were unforgettable. She had a deep love of reading and found great satisfaction in working with her hands, especially through knitting, hand quilting, and embroidery—creating pieces that will be treasured by her family for years to come. She also found great joy in playing the piano and passed that same appreciation for music on to her daughters.
Frances was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Skelton Huff; her father, Woodrow Anthony; her stepfather, Joseph Huff; her husband, John L. Campbell; her sister, Anne Pattillo; and her stepdaughter, Susie Campbell.
She is survived by her daughters, Dianne Farlett (Mark) and Catherine Hassi (Ted); her stepdaughter, Dorothy Campbell (Colleen Kerr); her stepchildren Joe Wright, Rebecca Henderson, and Teresa Wright; eight grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and one step great-granddaughter.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Palmettos at Parklane Assisted Living (Columbia, SC) and the staff of The Beach House Assisted Living (Jacksonville Beach, FL) for their kindness, compassion, and diligent care. Frances formed special relationships with so many caregivers during her illness, and no less being the precious bond with her primary caregiver, Sara, whose care and companionship brought her great comfort over the past two years.
As per Frances’ wishes there will be no funeral service. The family will host a Celebration of Life in the near future in Florida.
Contributions can be made in Frances’ name to the Elizabeth Dole Foundation or to the Alzheimer's Association.
