
IRMO – James Allen Hinton, 74, of Irmo, SC passed away February 9, 2012. He was born June 17, 1937 in Reidsville, NC to James Clyde Hinton and Willie Saunders Hinton.
James retired from the US Army in 1981, where he had obtained the rank of Command Sergeant Major. While in the army, he served in the Vietnam War, as well as held the prestigious position as a guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. He also retired as Director of Security at University Hospital in Augusta, GA.
James was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Donald Hinton and Michael Hinton. James is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary Alan Hinton and Amy Starling Hinton of Irmo, SC; four grandchildren, Dalton Hinton of Radium Springs, NM, and Carson, Emilie, and Ashley Sears of Irmo, SC; a sister, Nancy Carol Kennedy, of Martinez, GA; and ex-wife, Alma Burnette Hinton, of Grovetown, GA.
The family will receive friends at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Rd, on Thursday, February 16, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
