Tom was born on March 25, 1958 in Kronach, Germany and grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in Chemistry. He worked as a pharmaceutical chemist in Greenville, North Carolina before pulling up stakes and moving to St. John, in the Virgin Islands. He enjoyed the island life for many years, where he worked as an electrician. He eventually returned to the mainland and settled in Columbia, South Carolina.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, Garry and his brother, Philip. He is survived by his mother, Erika; his sister, Carolyn and her family: Christopher, Alexandra & Miguel, Jack, and May; and his brother, Christopher and family: Anne, Daniel & Jessica, Andrew & Marlaina, Sarai, and Amelia.
