Born on April 23, 1938 to Ana Maria Mesa Fuentes and Camilo Mohar Hernandez, Papa spent his early years growing up in San Cristobal, Cuba. Raised by his loving father and surviving polio in youth, he eventually moved to Havana where he met and married Berta Sarmiento Vidal. Together they had their son Lazaro “Larry” and moved to the United States. With the help of the Amos family, Papa began establishing their lives here in the States and helped Berta’s son, Hugo, move to the United States as well.
His “work” was never done, though. Papa spent his life helping others, sharing generosity with all those he loved as friends and family. His kindness and selflessness took many forms. If you were troubled and needed advice he would happily listen and then offer his honest and, often, direct opinion of what he thought best – and was often the right thing to do! To many he was there to provide in their time of need. Whether it meant bailing them out of trouble, paying for their education, or providing support to put food on the table for your family; he was there. He wanted nothing more than to make sure everyone was happy and healthy and he would give his all to make that happen. He loved to buy cars for his family – making sure they always could get where they needed to go – and to feed them as well! He was famous for his cooking and all the times he’d put smiles on people’s faces with picadillo, Cuban sandwiches, yucca, and of course, his pit-roasted pig.
Papa was one of the most generous, loving, and wise souls you could ever know and we were lucky to love him. He was preceded in death by his wife; Berta Mohar and his sons; Lazaro Mohar and Hugo Galban. He is survived by his granddaughters; Ashleigh Stewart (Daniel Stewart), Amanda Galban (Brady Parnell), great-grandchildren; Lucas and Hayleigh Stewart, daughter-in-law; Susan Galban, brothers; Jose Mohar and Camilo Mohar, sisters; Mayra Rabelo and Cecilia Mohar, niece; Belkis Mohar, nephew; Jose Mohar, extended family; Gloria M. Piedra, Osvaldo Jesus Piedra, Osvaldo Piedra, Adalberto Piedra, extended family; Jose Galban, Yohanka Galban, Marjories Ward, Anna Belle, and Caroline Ward, and the many friends who, because of Papa, are part of our family.
He will be missed immensely and remembered always.
