
Annie Elizabeth Cleverdon Dodelin, 93, of Columbus, GA died November 18, 2011 at Columbus Hospice. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Porter Chapel of First Baptist Church with Dr. James C. Elder officiating. A private interment will follow the service. Visitation will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Sunday, November 20 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Mrs. Dodelin, daughter of Dr. Leroy Geach and Edna Childress Cleverdon, was born September 17, 1918 in Summerdale, AL. She graduated from Judson College in Marion, AL. She was commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in World War II as one of the first two female officers in the Army Air Corps. Serving as a hospital dietician in Harlingen, TX she met her husband, Dr. Richard Albert Dodelin. They were married October 1, 1945 in Savannah, GA.
A resident of Columbus for 54 years, she was a locally known artist and a member of First Baptist Church, the Amoma Sunday School class, Mission Action I Circle, The Columbus Museum, the Historic Columbus Foundation, The Wynn House, the Mimosa Garden Club and the Columbus Artists’ Guild.
Mrs. Dodelin was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Richard Albert Dodelin, her sister Shirley Cleverdon Solms, her brother Leroy Childress Cleverdon and her grandson Richard Fort Dodelin.
She is survived by her two daughters, Shirley Anne Dodelin Hewitt and her husband Burton; Susan Dodelin Brewer and her husband Gerald of Roswell, GA; three sons, Richard Albert Dodelin, Jr. and his wife Jill; Frederick James Dodelin and his wife Marlene; and Donald Roy Dodelin and his wife Donna of Woodstock, GA; 14 grandchildren, Susan Hewitt Wall, Clyde Burton Hewitt IV, Shirley Anne Hewitt, Elizabeth Dodelin Lillie, William Evans Dodelin, Frederick James Dodelin Jr., Leigh Anne Dodelin, Clifford Davis Dodelin, Jeffrey Keith Dodelin, Claire Lorraine Dodelin, Gerald Raymond Brewer Jr., Caroline Elizabeth Brewer, Richard Dodelin Brewer and James Ryan Brewer; 10 great grandchildren, Richard Ryan Dodelin, Charles Julian Dodelin, Davis Morgan Dodelin, Lucy Millicent Lillie, Maxwell Hewitt Wall, Margaret Anne Wall, Mary James Hewitt, Anna Elizabeth Hewitt, Dixon Grace Hewitt and Sarah Ellen Hewitt.
