Charlie was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran who honorably served his country as a Demolition Expert. He received two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and several other medals for his service. After the service, Charlie trained at Ohio State University to be an Architectural Hardware Consultant. This led to several jobs in the construction industry where he was able to utilize his skills. Charlie and Janet later opened up Contract Hardware and Specialty Company. He worked there for 32 years prior to retirement in 2010.
Charlie was a very talented man. Even prior to retirement, Charlie enjoyed working in his workshop turning ordinary wooden boards into the most beautiful art pieces. He won several awards in the Georgia National Fair to include two Best In Show in 2009 and 2010. These pieces were never for sale and are proudly displayed around his home.
After retirement Charlie could be found on the lake doing what he loved…fishing. Charlie was an avid fisherman all of his life. He enjoyed the fishing and comradery that came with being a member of several bass clubs over the years. Not only did he enjoy “snagging the big one”, but he enjoyed and cherished the friendships made even more.
Charlie’s love for fishing did not outweigh the love for his family, especially Janet. Family was important to Charlie. He was always teaching his kids and grandkids right from wrong, responsibility, great work ethic and how to love. He built a great legacy that will continue for generations.
Charles H. Whittle will be remembered for his honesty, strength, ability to tell a great story, unwavering friendships, the love and dedication to family and love for the Atlanta Braves and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
