Corinne Hamner Betts Jarrell (87) passed away peacefully Sunday January 24th, 2021 at Columbus Hospice. Corinne was born on March 20, 1933 in Columbus, Georgia to Pearl Lowe Hamner Betts and Robert Barkley Betts. She graduated from Columbus High School and Auburn University, and was a proud member of the ADPi sorority.
Corinne taught third grade at Winterfield Elementary School in Columbus. While teaching she met her future husband, Dr. Harold George Jarrell, who had recently returned from serving in Japan during the Korean War.
Her family was the joy of her life. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great grands, as well as her extensive extended family of nieces and nephews.
Corinne is survived by her children: Julie J. Yancey (Dr. Pat Yancey), Dr. Harold George Jarrell Jr (Kim), and Chappell J. Miller (Charles), grandchildren: Dr. Patrick Yancey lV (Mary Caroline), Jefferson Yancey (Meg), Palmer Miller, H. George Jarrell lll, Barkley Yancey, Cannon Jarrell, Adelaide M. Niketas (Captain Jackson Niketas), and great-grandchildren: Laughton Yancey, Louise Betts Yancey, and Henry Harold Yancey.
Corinne is survived by her sister Adelaide Betts Brasse (Bill) and predeceased by her brother, Robert Barkley Betts, Jr.
Corinne was always a student of history and active in many historical societies. She chaired the renovation of the Walker Peters House for the Historic Columbus Association. She was an active member of Westville and at one time the chairwoman of the furnishing committee. She held membership in George Walton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Major Peter Field Chapter National Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century.
Corinne and Harold moved to live full time on their farm, Timm’s Creek, in Taylor County after Dr. Jarrell retired from his medical practice. They enjoyed raising cattle and horses for many years on their farm. For over 25 years Corinne owned and operated Timm’s Creek Antiques. She loved collecting objects of history and beauty, and spreading the joys of acquiring pieces of history.
In her final years, Corinne found love, joy, and friendship within the community of Spring Harbor. She and her friends celebrated and supported the arts that Columbus State University and the city of Columbus had to offer. She also found joy in being able to teach at the Literary Alliance, where she loved to help others learn to read.
Corinne loved the Lord with all her heart and was a lifetime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Corinne and her husband, Harold, glorified God through their efforts to restore, preserve, and beautify their beloved Union United Methodist Church in Taylor County.
This side of Heaven was a happier place because of the love she shared with all who came in contact with her.
