April 23, 1916 - October 9, 2017
David Williford Land, 101, of Columbus, Georgia, peacefully passed away Monday, October 9, 2017.
Mr. Land was born April 23, 1916 in Chipley, Georgia, now known as Pine Mountain, Georgia, to M.J.C. and Allie Sanders Land. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife who was the love of his life, Joyce Ball Land; and his brothers, Judge A.J. Land, Dr. Polk Land and Crawford Land. Mr. Land proudly served his Country in the United States Marine Corps special services from 1934 to 1938, and returned to serve during World War II, in 1945 and 1946, when he was assigned to sea duty on the USS Bennington. Between his two military tours, he was one of six motorcycle policemen in Muscogee County at the time. Following his second military tour, he went into the food service equipment supply business called Superior Fixture Company. After years of successful operation one of the company’s owners died and the company dissolved. He then went work with the Hecht Company. An avid gardener, he always had plenty of harvest to share with his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and bird hunting, was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and an active lifelong member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, often one of the first to arrive for early Sunday Morning Worship. Mr. Land especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and always enjoyed sharing interesting stories of his life experiences with others. He leaves a wonderful legacy to his family who will always cherish precious memories of Granddaddy Land.
Mr. Land is survived by his daughters, Joyce (Win) Fowler and Patty (Tommy) Livingston; his grandchildren, Scott (Jaime) Livingston, Christi (Ed) Reaves, Jennifer Fowler, and Wade (Polly) Fowler; his nine great-grandchildren, Davis, Isa, and David Scott Livingston; Land, Allie, and Grace Reaves; Hattie Fowler; Sally and Louise Fowler; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
