

Dorothy Mason Nix, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend passed away August 7, 2013 after a short illness. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Friday, August 9, 2013, 11 a.m. with Reverend (Dr.) Jimmy Elder officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel of Pines Mausoleum, Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. She was born October 22, 1932 in Three Notch, AL to the late Jack and Florence Pritchett Mason. She grew up in Union Springs, AL where she attended Union Springs High School. Dorothy earned a B.S. degree from Montevallo College. She went on to earn a Master’s degree and a Specialist’s Degree in Education from Georgia State University. Mrs. Nix had a career in education where she taught school for more than 30 years. She was with Fort Benning School System briefly and spent the rest of her teaching career with Muscogee County School District. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the International Honorary Organization for Women Educators and a member of Phi Delta Kappa where she was Kappan of the Year in 1992. Dorothy was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Columbus.
The center of Dorothy’s life was her family and friends. Everyone that knew her was touched by her true Southern hospitality and her loving, caring nature. Dot, as she was called by friends, was a volunteer at Callaway Gardens where she guided school children in the Butterfly Center and served as an instructor for new volunteers. She also volunteered at the Columbus Museum where she was a docent. Dot also served as a tour guide with Sunshine Tours and Southern Touch Tours. She was a guide to places such as the Biltmore House, Opryland, Branson, MO, The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Alaska, Ireland, Egypt and China.
She was an avid shopper, always buying things for others. She was also a huge sports fan and loved her Auburn Tigers and Atlanta Braves.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, George C. Nix, in 1993. She was also predeceased by her step-mother, Elizabeth Tomlinson Mason.
She is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca Nix Cartledge (Wayne), and Nanette Nix Boyett (Rick); three grandchildren, Lindsay Gallops, Mason Cartledge (Liz), all of Columbus and Brent Cartledge (Kourtney) of Milton, Georgia and three great grandchildren, Hunter Cartledge, Blakely Cartledge and Karoline Cartledge.
Dorothy is also survived by her brothers, Warren H. Mason (Ruby Jo) of Stone Mountain, GA and Charles R. Mason (Nancy) of Clayton, AL and her sisters Sarah Frances Mason, Linda Mason Carleton (George) and Martha Mason, all of Montgomery, AL. She is also survived by a niece, several nephews, and many dear friends.
