George Robert Mayer Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 4:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus. Burial will be held Monday, November 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.

Mr. Mayer was born on July 27, 1931 in Berkley, MI to the late Shirley Mayer and Georgina Gasko Mayer. He was retired from the United States Army after serving during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon retirement from the Army, he worked at Ft. Benning as a Technical Inspector. Mr. Mayer was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a brother, Scott Mayer and a grandchild, James Mayer.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey G. Mayer of Columbus; six children, Debbie Davis (Donald) of Smith Station, AL, George Mayer, Jr. (Ginger) of Headland, AL, Thomas Mayer (Terry) of Neshanic Station, NJ, Pam Long (David) of Wichita, KS, Vicki McIntosh (Lester) of Colorado Springs, CO and Steve Mayer (Trish) of Wichita, KS; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Mayer of Kingman, AZ and two sisters, Linda Kirkpatrick of Rossville, GA and Georgina Moore of Berkley, MI.
