Hugh L. “Larry” Norton, Jr., 77, passed away on September 3, 2021 at Townsend Park Helath and Rehabilitation in Cartersville, Georgia. He was a loving husband of Sandra Johnson Norton. They shared 55 loving years of marriage together.
Larry was born in Columbus, Georgia on March 25, 1944. He was the son of Hugh L. and Eva O. Norton. Larry graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in 1962 and attended Columbus State University as well as Georgia Southern University. He was a member of the US Air Force, having been discharged in 1965. He retired after 30 years of service with Lucent Technologies where he was an accounting associate.
Growing up in Columbus he began his faith journey as a Christian with his family as active members of East Highland United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in Cartersville, Georgia. Larry enjoyed reading, and talking; especially when it related to history, politics (his monologues were historic in themselves), airplanes, cowboys, and the weather. He also enjoyed the 15 years he and Sandra lived in Ocala, Florida, after their retirement in 2000. But mostly, he loved his family dearly.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Emily (Rick) Ward and Jennifer (Chris) Stone; grandchildren: William Jacob Ward, Lauren Elizabeth Stone and Kathryn Elaine Ward; and his sister, Sheryl (Carl) Norton Dexheimer of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Edward “Eddie” E. Norton.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 3:00 PM in Parkhill Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia.
