Family will visit with friends on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907. A service to celebrate his life will be at 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Burial with military honors will be at 1:00 PM in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
Johnny Burge was born in Oklahoma to the late Merle McGee Burge and Troy Ralphus Burge on December 16, 1928. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army for over 24 years. Johnny met the love of his life while he was stationed in Germany, Martha Uhrmann she became his wife in December of 1953. His military career took the Burge family around the world to many posts. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1970, Columbus, Georgia would be called home for the Burge family. Johnny was able to enjoy his retirement woodworking, hunting, fishing and enjoying the great outdoors. His woodworking skills can be found in his home in some of the furniture of his very own craftsmanship. Johnny was always in the know of how to “modify” anything that needed repair. He always had a good story to tell and a great sense of humor. Johnny loved his family, he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Burge; daughter, Eva “Evi” Burge (Michael) Fox; son Alfred “Al” (Elizabeth) Burge; brother Jim (Inez) Burge; sister-in-law Virginia Burge; nieces: Tina Marie, Betty Kay, Cherie Jane, Pam and Amy; nephews: Jeff, Bruce and Bob; and a host of good friends. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Troy Burge and his brothers: Jack Burge and Bob Burge.
