Mr. Roy was born on June 11, 1924 in Eagle Lake, Maine, son of the late, Charles Roy and Rose Anna (Deschamps) Charette. As a teenager, Mr. Roy was raised by Remie Raymond (Victoria) in Millinocket, Maine. Mr. Roy was preceded in death by his sisters, Cécile Bérubé (Leo) and Rose Lavoie (Henri); and brothers, Arthur Roy (Joyce), Leonard Charette (Joyce), and Patrick Charette.
Mr. Roy is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Rosemarie G. Roy (Plaumann); two sons, Joseph Roy (Tonya) Midland, GA, and Charles Roy (Pamela Roy) Midland, GA, and one daughter, Caroline Hagler (Dennis) Midland, GA.; his grandchildren, Brandon Roy (Beth), Mallory Bosco (Kyle), Caitlin Hagler, Braxton Roy; his great-grandchildren, Griffin and Abigail Bosco; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Roy, retired MSG, served over 28 years in the U.S. Army branch of the military, originally enlisting on March 10, 1943. He served in WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam. Five days prior to his 20th birthday, Joseph landed on Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy Invasion of WWII. During the summer of 1945, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Saint-Lo, and the Battle of Falaise Pocket. He entered Germany with Allied Forces in August of 1945. Years later, Joseph again saw extensive combat action in the Korean War. During his military service, Joseph was the recipient of multiple medals and accommodations. These were some of the many accommodations he received, Bronze Star, Seven Good Conduct Medals, Two Army Commendation Medals, Combat Infantry Badge, Service Campaign Medals- WWII, and Korean War, Vietnam – MACV.
As a young man, Mr. Roy was a lumberjack in Millinocket, Maine. After his retirement from the Army, he worked at Ryder for 11 years.
Mr. Roy enjoyed hunting, marksmanship, boating, tinkering on cars and was a skilled carpenter known as “Mr. Fix It” by his friends and family. He was fluent in French and German. He was fondly known as “Uncle Bee'' by his Canadian nieces and nephews. He was a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, friend and soldier.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be held at The Infantry Chapel, 7070 Sigerfoos Road, Fort Benning, GA 31905 on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 11:00AM, Father Will Cook will be the celebrant. Family will visit with friends at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4171 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907 on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Burial will follow Mass on Thursday at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
