Dear Pat,
Your news of Joe's passing was such a shock when you told me tonight.  Please know that we would have shared in the celebration of his life if we had known. 
You are a strong woman and you will get through this. However, don't be afraid to lean on your loved ones and friends for their love and support in this most difficult time.
Joe was a great man and so well thought of throughout the community.  He will be missed!
