Katherine Meinzen Day, 97, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on February 28, 2025. She lived life as a kind and loving wife, Mother, Grandmother and friend, all shaped by her strong faith and Christian values.
She was married to two West Point Class of 1948 graduates, Col. Walter E. Meinzen and Col. Philip S. Day both proud and highly decorated infantryman who predeceased her.
Mrs. Day and her first husband, Col. Walter Meinzen, retired in Columbus Georgia after a 30 year military career, much of it spent at Ft. Benning. As a widow, she later re-connected with Col. Philip Day at a Class of 1948 Reunion, and they married and split their time between Lake Tahoe, California and Columbus, Georgia.
Katherine’s persistence, resilience and perseverance carried her through her many military moves and challenges all the while adding lifelong friends. In addition to her family, many friends and her church community, she loved antiques, her garden, fashion and her dogs. Her sharp mind and wit endeared her to those whose lives she touched.
She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth Becker and William T. Codling; her infant son, David C. Meinzen; her two husbands, Walt and Phil; and her two sisters, Anne C. Drummond and Mary C. Vance. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Meinzen McEnerny; son, Robert Meinzen (Yusi); granddaughter, Katherine Rosie; brother, Robert (Susan) Codling; and her many beloved nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to thank her good friend, Doreen Kraft, who cared lovingly for her for many years.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 7, 2025 at St. Paul Church of Columbus, 2101 Wildwood Ave., Columbus, GA 31906 with Rev. John Fugh, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Paul Church of Columbus or a charity of your choice.
