

Mary Anne Hendry died on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. She was born in Columbus on November 12, 1923, the daughter of Roy and Hassie Haden Screws. She was the wife of Glenn E. Hendry, Sr.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Alexander of Greenville, South Carolina and Martha Young of Beaufort, South Carolina and her son, Glenn Hendry, Jr. (Joyce) of Winter Garden, Florida. She is survived by grandchildren, Michael Alexander (Barbara Butler), Mark Alexander (Anita), Jennifer Post (Jeff), Abby Bourque (Leland) and Meghan Mercer (Max). She leaves 7 great grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her grandson, Wyatt Givens and her granddaughter, Madeline Hendry and her sons in law, Joe Alexander and John Young.
She and Glenn enjoyed traveling this country and Canada with their friends in their Airstream trailers and spending time at the cabin on Lake Harding.
Mary Anne grew up near the Columbus State Campus which in the 1920’s was considered “out in the country”. A buggy ride to town was 30 minutes and only a select few had an automobile. She enjoyed riding horses with her boyfriend, Glenn E. Hendry, Sr. To town where they would water their horses at the historic “Fit for Man and Beast” fountain that still stands at the corner of Broadway and 10th Street. After having her life saved by Glenn on a swimming trip with friends, they would marry and keep it a secret in order to graduate from Jordan High and remain together for the next 75 years. Having lived through the Great Depression and World War II, the Cold War and 9/11, Mary Anne lived a full life and experienced many things.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 30, 2026 in the Chapel of the Pines at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA, 31907.
