Mrs. Wommack, daughter of the late Jay Beasley and Jessie Cheshire Beasley was born on April 21, 1924 in Dale County, Alabama. She was an active member of Hamp Stevens United Methodist Church, and later at St. Mark United Methodist Church where she coordinated and delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years. She was also Communion Chairman for one year and an active member of the New Song Sunday School Class, and Dayspring Sunday School Class serving as secretary for a number of years.
In her earlier years she worked at the Columbus Manufacturing Company where she met and married James Walter Rodgers who served in the U.S. Navy during the War. They had a daughter Rose Mary Rodgers Thweatt, a gift from Heaven, who was born after Mr. Rodgers met with a fatal accident at Daytona Beach, Florida Navy Base.
She continued working after her husbands death at the Columbus Mill where she met and later married Joe Wommack (deceased) and they had a wonderful son Joseph T. Wommack, Jr., another blessing in her life, who has been a devoted son, always ready to help her do anything and everything she needed.
She went to work at Sears Roebuck on Broad Street and was the first telephone shopper for Catalog Merchandise at the store. When Sears moved to Macon Road telephone sales was growing and after working at the desk for several years she became the Manager of the Catalog Division for 10 years. Mary was actively involved in the Muscogee chapter of the American Business Women's Association for a number of years, and later the Sears Retirees Club.
She retired at age 62 spending that time with family and friends traveling and doing many things she enjoyed. She was known as the "queen of the Peachtree Walking Club" where she was faithful to go every morning at 6 a.m. and walk 5 miles with her sister, Omega Beasley Dykes, and many others she became friends with. Her favorite sport was baseball, and she enjoyed trips to Turner Field with friends and family to cheer her Braves Baseball Team to many victories. She would "chop and chant" with the fans whether at the game, or watching on T.V., never wanting to miss a game.
Her favorite thing to do was to cook delicious Sunday Dinners and gather all her family around her table. She would nave the meal on the table by 2:00, and still attended Sunday School and Church. Holidays were always a special time in her home where she cooked, served that amazing food to her family, and always with great joy and much love. Her family was her deepest love, and she was faithful to cover each one in prayer every day, calling out every name of every one before the Throne of her Lord, serving Him and His people to the end of her life, always honoring Him the way she lived her life.
