Nancy was born September 30, 1935 in San Jose, California to Jesse L. and Dorothy Felton Mayne. The family moved to Pensacola, Florida where she graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School in 1953.
She attended Auburn University where she met her husband-to-be, Jules. They graduated and married in 1957. The couple moved to Columbus, Georgia which became their lifelong home. They welcomed their daughters Carole in 1961 and Julie in 1966. Nancy completed a Master’s and a Specialist Degree in Education from Auburn University. She was a lifelong educator. She began teaching at Fort Benning and had a thirty-year career with the Muscogee County School District where she was a classroom teacher and later a math curriculum consultant. She finished her career teaching in the Education Department at Columbus State University.
She was an Auburn tiger through and through. While attending Auburn she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. For years she attended football games and never missed a televised Auburn sporting event. In Columbus, Nancy volunteered with several organizations to support the community. She volunteered for the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, the Anne Elizabeth Sheperd Home, and was a member of the Soroptimist Club. For years, Nancy played bridge with the same group of friends, and participated in a variety of book and study clubs. Nancy was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and supported the church through volunteer efforts as well. Nancy loved gardening and had an amazing rose garden. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and traveling. Her grandson Billy was her greatest joy.
