Peggy Louise Mitchell, 87, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on March 16, 2017. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, 11 a.m. with Rev. (Dr.) Jimmy Elder and Rev. Huey Bridgeman officiating. Private interment will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. Peggy was born August 13, 1929 to the late Dee and Louise Motley in Savanna, Oklahoma. Peggy grew up in McAlester, Oklahoma. She married her soul mate and the love of her life, Leon Mitchell on August 14, 1948. They moved to Stillwater where they attended Oklahoma State University. The Mitchells came back home to McAlester where Leon started his career in wholesale grocery management. In 1957 Peggy and Leon were blessed with their only child Michael. Leon’s heart, however, was not in management. His heart was with God and working with children. He was called to be the Minister of Youth at a church in Oklahoma City. This calling moved Peggy and Leon to several other churches over the years including ones in Memphis and Winston-Salem. More than anything Peggy loved being Leon’s wife and a stay-at-home mother. She enjoyed family vacations and church trips with Leon and Michael. Their later career years took them to Columbus, GA, where Leon medically retired from the First Baptist Church of Columbus and Peggy retired from Columbus Bank and Trust. Peggy was one of those rare people who, when she became your friend, became your friend for life. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Mitchell; son, Michael Mitchell; and her brother, Dee Motley. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Herta Savala; her grandchildren, Angela Stangle, Christina Bass and Melissa Amarov; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made First Baptist Church, ATTN: Youth Department, 212 12th Street, Columbus, Georgia 31901.
